One day I was at the sand and gravel yard, getting a load of garden mulch (wet, at that). There was a 1/2 yard loader sitting there, and the guy asked how much I wanted. I said "3 buckets".

So, he went and got the 1 yard bucket. Axle bent so bad the tire was rubbing on the trailer.

After removing half the material, we used the combination of a forklift to pick up the trailer, a big rock under the bent axle, and then the loader to press back down. Got the trailer back in usable shape.

Loader operator got chewed out, and no charge for the mulch that day.

I did, however, sell that trailer shortly afterwards. (And yes, I did tell the buyer that the axle was slightly bent).

Wow, that must have been a trip to the gravel yard you won't forget. :confused2:

If I was going to overload I would have used the truck NOT the trailer.

Really!!???. 2011 crew cab w/6 ft bed diesel cummins ram fully loaded cost 55 thousand bucks. And risk having dirt spill over and ruin the new paint or bust a leaf spring. Landscape trailer 10 ft bed x 5 foot cost 1000 bucks and you dont worry what happens to its axle cause it can be replaced easily and no paint to ruin. Your no playin with a full deck are you?

What!? In all those truck commercials I've seen, they usually drop a pallet of bricks in the back from a crane! Are you telling me the leafs on that work truck can't handle a little dirt?:)

I know what you're talking about- hate to dirty up a perfectly good work truck when you have a utility trailer to abuse. Been there, done that- I just try to not endanger anyone other than myself if I can help it.

First they stole/shorted you 2' off the bed, and then over-charged for the whole thing! :D

My point previously, was I have been in the same position. So I loaded both the truck AND the trailer, without overloading either. I do use the trailer often when hauling stuff, partly as I mentioned before... My RAM is stock suspension 4x4 Cumming longbed. But even though it sits at stock height, that is really tall to shovel dirt, compost, gravel etc out of. The 5x8 utility trailer sits much much lower, and is easier to lift stuff in/out of, and to shovel stuff in/out of.

I'm lazy some times too, and leave my 5th wheel hitch in the truck. One thing I do not like about 5th wheel's... So the utility trailer works good then too...

Our other truck(my parents have now, since we got a car; did not need two trucks any more) is a Ram-1500. The bed was lined the day after we bought it, over the bed rails. It is 8 years old now, and the lining has held up well. I wish I would have done that with our truck(the '01 Ram 2500 Cummin blah blah blah...)

The other thing I have seen folks do, is lay a tarp in the bed, so it hangs over. Keeps the bed, and the outside of the truck clean. Just tie it over the load while transporting...

I got 10 years out of mine, where it had just a couple minor knicks/dings that waxed out fine. tha tincludes trips out hunting/4 wheeling. I baby it, but go where I need to go.

That's the tough part about trucks now... They ARE a truck... but many are $40-60k... But, it is a truck! But, it's expensive... But...!!!

Fortunately, in this day and age, there are those options for bed liners etc that help protect that investment...
