My dad used to dig out a gopher/mole hill, add a tbsp of carbide and a glass of water, then cover the hole as quickly as possible. After the carbide fizzed for 30 seconds he would toss a match and the resulting explosion seemed to take care of the rodents.

Acetylene is explosive from 5% in air to 95% in air, so the mix is not critical.

I forgot to mention that my current strategy is mole plants (caper spurge) scattered around the perimeter of the yard. Around here they bear seed heavily and re-seed themselves, so there is no expense once you have the first plant. Burrowing animals won't go near the plant.
