Well, finally all my computer problems are over.

Glad to hear that, Bird. I wonder....would Vista SP1 be normally installed
automatically if you have Windows Update active? There have been so
many Vista updates.

I have had few probs with Vista, but I put another 1GB memory ($20) in
it for 2GB total. Many of Vista's normal background operations want to use
more than the 1GB my new Dell came with, if you believe the Process Monitor.

Although I have many years experience with computers and their inner
workings, they are just tools to me. I share your reluctance to get a lot
of things you don't feel you need. One exception I would like to suggest:
a wireless USB mouse....you can get the MS one for $25. If you do, you will
never go back.

For anyone that has shoulder or elbow problems, try a trackball or marble mouse. You need to move only your thumb and fingers, and the wrist a little. Much less movement than typing. I have been using them for several years and won't use anything else if at all possible. I will admit I have a small travel mouse to use with the laptop when I use it at other than at home. I hate the touch pad system. I make too many errors.

I was still using the mouse with the little ball in it until I bought this new computer.:D And the Hewlett-Packard optical mouse that came with the computer was defective to start with and Best Buy said they didn't have another one just like it, so they gave me what is supposedly a more expensive Gateway optical mouse. It seems to work OK to suit me.

And I got Service Pack 1 when I clicked on Windows Update.

my son just bought a Dell laptop at Best Buy for $700 ....more computer than I have at home that I spent a lot more on several years ago....He got it for his wife who has been assigned bed rest for the next 2 months --til the twins arrive!. Even got it in a blue color that she likes.

I love my wireless USB mouse! Not having to deal with the cord getting tangled on my crowded desk is great! Just be ready with a good supply of AAA batteries and whenever your cursor goes "flaky" pop in a new set. I use mine all day at work and the batteries last about 3 - 4 weeks.

I think they use the term "laptop" to loosely these days. Some of these new giants will do 2 things...1) make you legs go to sleep and 2) burn your legs with the heat.

Nothing wrong with them, actually I like them because you can move them around the house. But I think Portable is a better name. :D
