how to remove broken axle end

Thanks so much for the excellent suggestions.

I will order a rare earth magnet. In the meantime I think I'll try the redneck way E/S suggests using a welding rod in pvc. That is truly ingenious. I usually have no problem getting a welding rod to stick when I don't want it to.

When you weld onto the axle you will damage your bearings that are in the current path. I would use an alternate method.
I looked at the parts blow up view of this Cub 5252 and it looks like if you pull the axle out you will drop the axle spider gear hear is a link to the Messicks site with the view. TBN what is the concensus?

I like the magnet best. I think if you had a piece of pvc that would let the broken part in and was small enough to slide into the hole, I would place that in first. If you pull it out with a magnet and it drops when it clears the carrier, you will be taking the top of the tranny off to get it out.

I have taken broken axles out of dumptrucks and one out of a landrover with a piece of wood.

if it is not broken completely flush and has enough material poking up, you can gently tap a round piece of wood onto it and slowly pull it out.

Something holds the shaft in place inside. A keeper of some sort has got to be in there. Without knowing the tractor everything would be a guess. My guess is a groove with a keeper and bearings. Gotta open it up.

you're going to want to open it up anyway to get the little pieces of metal out of the diff assembly; otherwise they'll stay there chewing up other expensive parts in an abrasive slurry of work hardened metal and oil.

The op posted 3 times with no info as to what model or make he had ,Royjackson had to give the info that the op didn't.Then DEX posted a link to the sight that breaks down the axle assy that clearly shows that if he removes the bearing the shaft will also come out and there is a snap ring holding the shaft behind the bearing.
When the info given in the first post is non existent how can a anyone give accurate advice.

If you look at item 27 it has a ring retainer that probably pulls out with the axle shaft and I still wonder if the differential spider gears Items 35 and 36 would drop out of alignment if the axle is pulled out.

FYI, he has a Cub 5252 and probably needs a maintenance manual.

Does this unit have "C" clip axles?
If so you will have to open the axle up to get it apart.

Gears #37 will TEND to hold it(#35) in place.pasts 40-41 appear to hold the assembly in place. It really depends if retainer 27 holds the bearing or axle shaft in place.

well.........maybe he was excited......and didnt think about it....took me about 3 seconds to look at his profile and see what kind of tractor he has. why try to belittle or embarrass someone because his post didn't meet your criteria?

I went to Sears and got the heaviest magnetic pickup tool they had, 5lb pickup. I slid it in thru the axle housing and retrieved the splined end no problem. Very lucky that it wasn't stuck tight I guess. The break was completely clean with no pieces missing. Looks like the weld separated. I went ahead and replaced both axles with heavy duty ones. Only took about 30 minutes and it was back on it's wheels. Took much longer to refill the thing with oil.

Again, thanks to everyone offering suggestions for solving my problem.
