Thanks for all your input folks. I guess maybe it just comes down to a grand not being much when your dealing with equipment like this.

Just a bit of a shocker to see a $3k difference when half that parts are floating right past me to get to the mainland.

Why do you keep quoting the $3000 number when in reality the number is $1000. I would definitely pay $1000 to have a local dealer. I have seen too many people have majpr issues when not dealing locally.

Here is the real issue to me. It cost a lot to run a business, especially in Hawaii. Now if he loses all his business to the main land he will not be around when you need service. The other factor you are not considering, or maybe you are, is what is the cost to have the tractor brought to the container and packaged. I am sure there is more hidden cost then just the upfront cost of the container.

One last thought, and my apologies if it was mentioned before. I would check on warranty rules as it relates to problems that are considered non-warranty issues. In a previous business life we shipped equipment between different company locations and if we packed and shipped without the equipment manufacturers involvement we voided the warranty. My point is that tractor sale is in one state and warranty problem arises in another state where shipment was required and handled by you the owner and the new dealer, and manufacturer, may contend problem is non-warranty related. Buy local.

I know the monopoly shtick in Hawai'i is very frustrating. Many moons ago I tried to buy a Toyota truck on Oahu and no matter which dealer I went to after the first they obviously knew about me before I entered the showroom. Frustrating for sure but by local for a lot of the good reasons mentioned by others before.

I haven't been very clear on the numbers because they keep moving around

Here's what I've got now :

Price on Island = $18,300 w/ tax
Price on Mainland = $14,900 no tax applies
-----------
$3,400 Difference
Shipping average $1,400
--------
Savings $2,000

The warranty question is interesting. I've never heard of a shipping method voiding a warranty. Obviously it wouldn't even be worth considering if that's true. I'll ask the mainland dealer about it.

I have some questions, who gets the tractor to the container? Is the selling dealer taking responsibility for getting the tractor on its way to you? I guess if that is the case, you may be ok. If not you are going to have to pay someone to do it.

More thinks to consider.

Picked a dealer next to the port. He'll deliver and load into a private container. No charge.

Not really any hidden fees. They just go port to port. I pick it up at the yard down here. 95% of everything comes into the island this way so it's fairly streamlined.

I would love to support my local dealer, if for no other reason than to have someone I can hold responsible on a face to face basis. But come on guys.. Two grand?

That said I have yet to give the dealer my highest 'bid'. I guess it would have to be $500 over whatever my total costs would be. Who knows, maybe if I come in with the numbers he'll go for it. (but I doubt it) By the way this is not some mom and pop shop here. This is a major heavy equipment chain that also carries NH as a sideline.
