How to slow down hyd cyl travel

Thanks for all the messages. That adjustable one looks like what I need, since I would know what size fixed orifice to use. When I "visit" the tractor next week, I will see where I could possible mount one. There are two swing cyls, not sure how they are plumbed. I would like to avoid messing with the main multi-section valve and add it in-line some where before it splits to the two cyls. Maybe I will need two of them?

Here is what I used, just drilled small hole and worked great, cheap solution, I lost no power.

Not certain on hole size i'm certain a little searching and you'd find out.

You need just one, plumbed pretty much anywhere in the swing work
circuit. Regardless of the direction of the hyd flow, the adjustable
restrictor would provide resistance. Adjustability is a plus, over the
fixed restrictors since you do not know how much restriction is desirable
and you may want to change it depending on what you are doing with the
hoe. The valve does require at least one additional hose. This kind of valve
is what you can see on some of the commercially available hoe attachments
like the Woods BH90-X. I have a couple of these valves left over from my
hydraulic thumb experiments. PM me if you are interested in one.

I have a Bush Hog 742H backhoe on a NH TC33D tractor hooked to the tractor hydraulics.

Even with the tractor rpms only at about 1100, the side to side backhoe swing it way too fast. Is there some easy way to slow this down? Some flow restrictor or something?

Use two one way, variable restrictors, mounted so they restrict the return to tank....se pic...your cylinder/motor setup is assumed....

Page 6 of the Tompkins catalog has them. They are scattered throughout the catalog. NPT x JIC part # is RST2404. It looks like the restricted fittings have the RST prefix.

You guys are making this far more complicated than it has to be. A simple bullet proof $5 fitting will solve the problem. Get an orifice of about .062 and you will be fine. That's what they use from the factory to slow down cylinders. Keep it simple.

You guys are making this far more complicated than it has to be. A simple bullet proof $5 fitting will solve the problem. Get an orifice of about .062 and you will be fine. That's what they use from the factory to slow down cylinders. Keep it simple.

I agree. I use restrictors all the time. Only need to use one. Don't need to put one in each hose. Just don't use them in a line which has constant flow- creates too much strain on pump and releif valve.

If the restriction is too much, drill out the orifice just a tiny amount and try again. JoelD has the picture in a recent post.

If you want a set speed of swing, use a restrict-or with the desired orifice. If you want variable speed, use a needle valve in-line on the swing hoses. You can adjust it to suit your pleasure, from crawl to zippo.
