Still looking since thats half the fun!
I have a hi lift jack and I need to know how to use it to stretch a new barb wire fence. Never built a barb wire fence before so any tips would be helpful. I have the post in Im just lacking wire.

thanks

I think if I had much fence to install, I'd go to tractor supply or similar farm/ranch store and buy either an old time style rope pulley fence stretcher or a newer style metal stretcher. A handyman jack will get pretty heavy holding up to stretch the wire--plus you need the attachments for it, which might cost as much as just buying a stand alone puller.

Fence stretcher is about 35 bucks, after you "rassel" a highlift one time it will be money well spent.

High lift jack,

Thats one I never heard of, when I put up mine I just used an old come-a-long. Think it cost me about $5 and it worked like a dream. Just don't make it too awfull tight, when it gets cold the metal shrinks and will take the corner post with it. Don't ask me how I know that. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Come on guys.. it isn't that bad.

As far as the weight.. just hook the base up toa post with a chain, and then the top to the wire.

I usually sink a post outside and behind the fence for stretching anyway.. just another 2 mins on the PHD anyway.

Most all 'farm jacks' I've seen don't need any more atachments just for pulling single line fence like barb wire. Mine from tsc for 29$ had the angle adjustable jaw already bolted on tot he top of the jack.. great for barb wire.

I put up 3 strands 330' plus corner and brace posts, and T posts and a 12' tube gate in about 8 hours by myself. Had the jack, some chain.. a hammer and fence hammer, bucket of u-nails and long nails, some brace 10 wire and the PHD/Shovel.. etc.

If I was putting up field wire or other wire.. I'd get the stretching tool.. etc.

Very doable.

AH HA! So THAT"S what the thing on the end of the jack is for! never would have thought of using the jack for fence - always used a come-a-long or the regular stretcher. Probably stick with the stretcher, but now I gots to go TRY the jack anyhoo!
