How to take apart an led bulb

i have glass enclosed fixtures in many rooms. most are 2 lamp units. The glass totally encloses fixture.

The lamps in question state "DO NOT USE in an enclosed fixture" or something to that effect. I mean what the heck.

Wally World had tons of the old bulbs still available when I was there on Saturday. Inexpensive prices. I loaded up. I also find the government mandaded new bulbs sometimes fail to fit properly in some fixtures/ceilings.

I don't get the "not for enclosed fixture" thing. They produce minute amounts of heat, they already have a sealed glass/plastic bulb around them......so why that caveat?

Most 120v ones do create a lot of heat, thus the funky heatsinks on them..

Which makes me wonder how really efficient they are. Yes, the bulbs might be efficient, but the overall system? Large cooling attachments are NOT the sign of a high efficient system.

LED bulbs have big heatsinks because Underwriter Labs (UL) won't certify electronic devices that have regular operating temperatures above 90C/194F for safety reasons, even if the devices can handle it. An incandescent bulb isn't subject to those restrictions, so it can operate at much higher temperatures.

LEDs are far more efficient than incandescents, no question. And they produce a much nicer color spectrum than fluorescents. And they work well in the freezing cold, unlike some CFLs.


The tricky part in LED bulbs is the AC-to-DC power switching. Best to buy from a reputable supplier like Cree or Philips, or the power circuit may be Chinese crap, and buzz annoyingly and die early. The LEDs themselves should last just about forever.
