I fully understood what you meant, just playing along.
One thought I had though: You said you had a backhoe, but it was paved. Why not use the truck as your anchor and use the backhoe to pull against the chain? If the truck is enough to help pull, wouldn't it also be enough to anchor the hoe? Or would this have fallen into that category where the wheels needed to be turning in order to provide some "lift" as well as pull and the backhoe would only have provided pull?

Ray there is some downsides to that. He didn't have anyone else to hold their foot on the service brake pedal. You can put the transmission in Neutral and set the parking brake, but that only brakes the rear wheels, and allows the fronts to roll free. Not very effective.. If you put the transmission in Park, you can damage the parking pawl by pulling against it.

James, yeah I understand those points. But if you have the transfer case locked in, wouldn't the parking brake hold the fronts as well? Or do they disconnect the front drive with these new fangled electronic push button 4x4s?

You know, I am not sure.. for that matter is the transfer case still locked in when the key is off and the solenoid not pulled? I know the older Chevrolet used a heating element to heat ether into a gas to push something in the front differential that locked the axle to the prop shaft. I am guessing without the motor running it would not be locked in. I am just not sure

Reminds me of when I first climbed on my backhoe. I had a 50% chance of grabbing the right lever and a 50% chance of moving that lever the right way. So 25% of the time I did the right thing. I am a little north of those percentages now, but sometimes I revert back.
Ha ha... I resemble that remark!

Ya actually at least on my 2002 Chevy it does stay locked in with the engine off. I found this out when I replaced the front hubs. Newer trucks have all kinds of electronic bells and whistles. Can't beat the old 4wd turn the hub and shift in and you are good to go, but I can say with 198,000 miles on it the 4wd is still going strong even with winter plowing.

Yep, got my JD 5075 suck up to both axles in some low formerly swamp land a few weeks ago. Was feeling bold because I have a logging winch on the 3 pt hitch. Went and got the truck to use as an anchor to hook the winch to. I parked it up on top if the bank, on the other side of some brush/hedgerow. I had my daughter run the winch's pull strings, while I worked the transmission, throttle, diff lock, and used the bucket to lift the front axle out of the mud. I turned around in time to see the pickup getting dragged through the hedge row and about to come over the bank. "STOP!!!!!! Stop pulling the cord!!!" Went got some blocks to put behind the truck tires. Tractor's logging winch pulled itself right out. Handy thing.

Sorry, but that is funny. As I was reading I was guessing that would happen. Glad it worked out.
