Thanks to all! Maybe my rope will stop getting shorter; about every other tree, I've been getting frustrated and just cutting right at the knot.

Thanks again.

Oh-Yeah, till the bitter end.......... hehehe!

I still have a bunch of big old "hemp rope" that wo'n't quit, but is hard to un-knot, so I tied on a short length of very dense nylon rope which with the right knot on the tree tends to untie much easier. Cheap fix for me.

I go with what Highbeam said - that's how I see the professional tree "fellers" do it

If you have to use a rope instead of a chain or cable the knot I'd recommend is called a timber hitch. It's not hardly a knot in the truest sense as the "dead" end of the rope is just looped back & then wrapped around it's self several times. The friction of the rope wrap on the bark will hold it in place.

This shows how to tie it.

Hmmm.... what knot to use to pull trees.... hmmmm.... Timber hitch..... hmmmm...... trees = timber..... hmmmmm..... :D

We were taught that one in Boy Scouts. It is such a simple knot, takes only seconds to tie, and loosens up easily. I use that one a lot. One of the top knots to learn, in my opinion. :)

When I used to be an arborist, I found you really only needed four knots.

A clove hitch, a bowline, a running bowline and a taut-line hitch.

Two extra's that are nice to know are a truckers knot and a bowline-on-a- bite. A truckers knot is very nice for tying down loads when you need to pull a rope tight and lash down something. A bowline-on-a-bite is nice for putting a loop in the middle of a rope that you can easily get undone later.

Get a chain. Having a rope snap is no fun.

Bowline

The Bowline

Best knot site I have found, There are lots of other knots on there, but really the Bowline is the one to use.

This is a great sight, Had to save that 1 to my favorites,
Thank You

How to tie knots when pulling trees?

Find a preacher that makes house calls? I must say though I think it's inappropriate to be get married while you're pulling down a tree but to each his own I guess. Also, don't tie the knot multiple times. Well, at least not more than one at a time.

I really appreciate the advice given....especially the bowline and timber hitch. This past weekend I got back to cutting down trees. I used the bowline most of the time and remain amazed at its simplicity to tie and the ease of removal after the tree falls.

Thanks!
