Tractor
Looking
OK,
so I had my Kioti CK25HST delivered Wednesday and have read the manual and spoke with the dealer a bit which was all nice information but I still don't have a good feel for how to properly use my tractor. Are there any good books on the subject.

For example, what RPM do I use for my tiller, when just using the grader, how about the box scraper?

How fast or slow do I go?

When do I engage the PTO for the various devices?

Do I engage the PTO with the tiller raised and then lower it or do I have it lowered and then start the PTO?

And 100's of more questions about how to properly use my new machine.

The manual isn't any good and I don't want to call the dealer every time I have a stupid sounding question.

Any ideas?

Here we go:

Implements that are pto run are rated for a certain pto speed. usually 540pto rpm for most compact jobs. Some ag tractors also have a 1000rpm pto option.. and some compacts.. like imports have 2 or even three pto speeds.

Yours is probably 540.. which is standard.. your tiller is to, if you bought it as a package deal. On your tractors tachometer.. there will be a mark telling you at what engine rpm, the pto is spinning 540. It is generally accepted to keep the implement out of the ground, and have the engine at a mid idle.. engage the pto.. if it has a soft engage or feather function.. use it.. or if your 2stage clutch is the feather.. gently let the clutch out.. but don't slip it long.. just like if you were going into gear.. etc. then once the implement is turning.. bring the engine speed up to pto speed..... then ease the implement into the ground. Same with turning off the pto.. reduce engine speed first.. then disengage.. this will save wear on your pto brake if your tractors has one.

Same with the mower.. engage the pto when the mower isn't loaded with grass.
Mow at a ground speed that lets you keep your engine speed at pto rpm, and isn't too fast for you to maneuver. That will vary on your terain. In an open field you can get a good clip... I can mow at about 10mph.. maybee more.. on my big nh7610s and 10' mower... In a crowed field with lots of trees.. that would be angerous.. 5mph might be safer.. etc..

AS for your scraper.. etc.. choose a decent engine rpm that lets you move your material, without bogging or stalling the engine.

If i'm just grading a road.. I use less that pto rpm.. if I'm really pushing some dirt, or dragging a full box blade of dirt.. I'll need more power...

keep asking.. there are lots of people here with answers

Congratulations on your purchase!

I'm attaching a picture of a CK25/30 tachometer for easy reference.

It's a small picture, I'm able to enlarge it by holding my mouse over it and a box appears in the lower right corner to click on....

Just one note about starting the PTO when you have a mower on: Put the mower pretty much down where you are going to use it as it's a bad idea to have a mower up in the air while the blades are spinning. Make sure you're not setting it down on something the blades will hit and sling, of course, the increase to PTO speed. The tiller and most other PTO stuff can be started raised, but no need to be all the way up. Just for safety. John

WELCOME TO THE FORUM! soundguy and a few others have given u good advise on how to engage or disengage the pto driven implements. as far as Rpms when working with other implements, listen to the tractor, u will know when it needs more Rpm, just a little experience is all you need.

First off, DO NOT BE AFRAID TO CALL THE DEALER AND ASK HIM, he took your hard earned money and should be showing you how to use your machine. Every new tractor purchase I have made included the sales person making the delivery to my house and giving me full instructions on my property, including routine maintainence procedures. I've never asked for it, they just always did it. And since I've gotten new tractors from 3 different dealerships and they all did the same thing I sort of assumed that was pretty much standard procedures that the dealers did that???

Secondly I think one of the great things about this forum is you can ask and get great advice. There is an amazing amount of knowledge on the forum and many people from many different backgrounds all share one common interest. TRACTORS!!!

I don't know about books on use of your tractor, but I do know there is LOTS of info in the archives here...

But more importantly, read as much of the safety forum as you can. Tractors are not the same as the vehicles you may have used in the past. For example, did you know a tractor can flip over backwards if its tires happen to be frozen to the ground?

Tractors are powerful machines. They are different, wonderful, special and DANGEROUS if you don't truly understand their capabilities.

Enjoy that tractor. It will soon become your best buddy when there is work to be done. Don't fear it, but understand it. Be aware of the danger of roll overs...they can happen on flat ground, not just on hills if you do the wrong thing.

And wear your seat belt all the time...at least most of the time. It will save you if you do tip the tractor...you won't, but you just never know...

My my Tach says 2600 the PTO is doing 540 RPMs, which is what most implements use. When I am not using an implement that uses the PTO, I usually run 1800-2000 RPM. I warm the tractor up for 5 minutes at the beginning of the day at 1400, and idle at 1000 for about a minute or longer before shutting it down (to cool the engine down uniformly).

Thanks for asking these questions. I don't have my tractor yet, but some of these questions have already been rolling around my head. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

On my tractor shopping list, I've included "Introduction and Orientation of tractor and equipment" Any dealer who doesn't include that will not be getting my business. I'm a newbie (and still "visitor" on TBN /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif). I have to learn everything. On the other hand, the dealer I'm closest to making the buy from, specifically stated he wanted my wife to be present as well. I'm sure that is to ensure he'll have one person actually paying attention. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It's a very large picture (1122 x 1587) -- mainly just white -- with a smaller portion in the top left corner. I have cropped the important part and attached it here.
