How to use my tractor - from a newbie

Common sense and thinking about what you are going to do and how to do it combined with lots of seat time may help.

Keep the toes and fingers away from rotating parts and don't aim the discharge chute of the mower at a big picture window.

Keep all safety shields in place and properly secured.

Make sure you know where all the people are in relation to what you are doing and learn the clearances with different attachments. [wife gets angry if you scrape her car ]

ALWAYS keep in mind that your tractor is sized differently and has different maneuvering characteristics than a car or, say, a garden tractor, especially in light of the ROPS height and with implements attached (i.e. FEL). Score: BX22 -- 3, Garage door, siding and fence -- 0. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Other than PTO driven attachments, which need to be kept near to the recomended speed, the best advice I can give is to go slow and keep aware of what is around you. When you realize how much work a tractor can do compared to what you can do with hand tools, you see that you don't need to go very fast with it to have a huge benefit. Going faster only helps to a point, as it results in a lot of wear and tear on the tractor and implements, and often you'll have to repeat things and make second passes.

Experience only comes by doing, so put on some hours and enjoy figuring out your technique!

OK, so let me make sure I understand this. The red dot on my tach is the PTO RPM indicator and NOT the "redline" indicator? When I saw the Red dot, I assumed that was Redline so I never went near it. This is obviously a VERY important question. I haven't had my engine up over about 2200 yet. I also haven't attached a PTO implement to it yet. Just the box scraper.

Did everyone feel this uninformed when they bought their first tractor? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

That is correct. Does it not also have 540 written near the line? Many models do. So far, you haven't needed to get to the RPM as most tasks don't require higher RPM, so you're doing well. There is always a lot to learn with anything new. Trust that noone was born knowing how to use all the things a tractor has to offer!! John
