My TC29D started to make a howling noise in the back. I just changed my Hydro Fluid about three weeks ago and now after 15 hours this started. If I put the clutch in the noise goes away. Can anyone tell me what they think the noise is. I bought Hydraulic/Transmission Fluid from Sam's Club.

Just my opinion but I think different fluids have a LOT to do with HST noise. Seems like the heavier the fluid the more noise? I noticed this with my Cub when I changed. It's expensive to experiment with the stuff though. If I were you I would pull the fluid and replace it with the NH stuff. Sometimes you just have to pay........

Murph, have you had a big change in temperature there? If it has become much cooler over the last few days, then the problem might be increased hydro transmission whine, but it should go away if you stop movement. If the transmission continues to make the noise when you shift the range to neutral, then it's pretty much gotta be the hydro. I'd try neutral and then hold the pedal to maximum forward and maximum reverse to see if the noise is the same, less, or not at all. If this makes the noise get much quieter, I'd guess it could be the fluid. If the noise stays the same, then it could be something else binding inside the transmission.

You also might try the PTO to ON/OFF to see if that changes things.

When I changed my fluid a few weeks ago, I used the fluid from Tractor Supply and I noticed it was a lot thicker than NH fluid. I bet the fluid from Sam's was too. I haven't noticed any problem, but our temperatures are typically much warmer here and the viscosity of the heavier fluid may not be a problem. In you climate, it sure could make a difference.

Does CNH make different grades of hydro oil? I heard they do for cold climates . Also does anyone know of an additive that may help life of a hydro unit. Prolong, slick 50 or viagra

Seafoam didn't destroy my Cub. Actually the HST seemed a bit quieter. But then I paid $4 for it and my imagination may have once again overcome reality?

If you use dthe seafoam trans addative, it is suposed to remove moisture from the system (dewater).

If you had water contaminated oil, and cleaned it witht he addative.. i don't doubt the HST got quieter... water in a hydro system can lead to cavitation.. cavitation =alot of pump noise..

double check your fluid level, my old 33d made a lot of noise when the level was just a little low. Got rid of most of the noise by keeping it up to the top line - always checked it when the tractor was cold.

Went out last night and did some checking. The noise did not seem to be there as much. But no matter what I do, if I put the clutch in the noise goes away. I will have it out more this week-end and will do lots of work. Last night was more a just run a round the yard a bit and I am not sure I really got it warm.

Murph, if you put the clutch in, you are removing all input to the transmission, so that means the noise has to be coming from the transmission and not the regular hydraulic pump.

When you let the clutch out, the hydro transmission turns the same whether you are in neutral or any of the three gear ranges. The gear ranges are just a transmission behind the transmission. By putting your range selector into neutral and letting out on the clutch, your hydro is turning without any load. That should also make it quiet. Normal transmission whine only begins when you put the transmission under load. you should be able to move the hydro pedal to full forward and reverse while the range selector is in neutral and hear very little noise too. If the transmission howls, then I'd say the pump or motor part of the transmission may need some attention. If it's quiet and only howls when the range selector is in gear and the tractor is moving, then I think the problem is probably the cold fluid.

No... these oil additives are not worth ten cents a barrel in my opinion. Go and Google Slick 50 (or any other oil additive) for example and you see that nothing beats a propper oil change plus filter. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
