Howse cutter at Northern Tool

The image would indicate it's their H.D. 5' cutter, but, the details they give match with the standard duty 5' cutter. I was always under the impression that Northern handled the standard duty stuff just like Tractor Supply handles the standard duty KK/County Line.

I bought mine lots of years ago and it was called medium duty then. I use it instead of my Woods rotary cutter when bigger brush needs cutting. Its a lot heavier than my Woods M5 but doesn't leave quite a nice of cut. If I remember the heavy duty rating (at the time mine was new) had a 75 hp rating on the gear box and not much else difference.

Mine also has the heavy round plate underneath that the blades attach to. I guess overall its been a good mower even though I still prefer my Woods.

That looks like one of their older design decks, medium duty at best. From that pic the bush hogs gear box looks like a 40 hp or less pto rated one and not the 65 hp rated pto gearbox. Reminds me of International/World Agri Corp hogs(Now Hawkline I believe).
If a 5' non commercial unit is what you seek I'd say thats a decent deal.

This design as shown by VirginiaAgent is the current listing @ Northern Tool. The Howse cutter is listed as made in USA. Northern also sells the King Kutter, not sure where they are made.

As you mentioned it's Medium duty. They used to be listed as such but now no mention of that.

I think Steave is right. That is an old pic of a MH(medium heavy) model that was discontinued a few years back. The ad has a pic of the MH model with the specs of their economy 500 cutter.

Ted - the Fred Cain 205 on your website. It's weight is 700 lbs, would you consider that medium duty? What width material does it handle?

Howse Rough Cut Mower 3-Point, Category 1, 5ft. Length | Category 1 Mowers| Northern Tool + Equipment

Can anyone figure out which model this is? I've looked at the Howse website but can't match it up. Trying to figure out if it's light duty or medium duty.

The weight for a 5 footer is pretty decent at 500 pounds.

I have the same one and it is standard duty, but rated for 55HP in the gearbox, so not bad. It can handle up to 2" stuff, but not well. I run through piles of 1" stuff with no issue at all. I use this to chew up my brush piles with anything 1.5" and smaller. No chipper needed . This is a very popular rotary cutter, one you can easily find in CL for $400-500. There isn't much to go wrong with these, so if you want to save the money, buy used.

Yeah, that's kinda what I already stated above in the thread. Nice work, nonetheless.

The pic on Northern's site is not congruate with a medium/heavy cutter per their own description.
