Rotary Cutter Howse question -- splines shot and MF 231 won't lift it

Thanks for the info. That's what I thought, but when I took this apart it was clear the SJ could move about 3 inches up the shaft so I thought that must be how they work. My guess is this whole thing has been cobbled up before it fell into my hands.

Its been a while so I thought I'd report back. The "fix" is still holding. I've probably mowed 10 hours or so and everything seems to be holding fine. Of course, I'm more careful than before.
