This is great man....so tell me....have you lived in the City all your life? Around where I live a farm is something that produces income. 1 acre that has a house on it we call a lot. 20 acres a plot....or if you have horses or cows a mini farm. Anyway, no matter.....moving out in the country must feel great if you lived in the city all your life.

If you are just getting into tractors be aware of a few things that might help your decision of used vs new.

Used tractors are very expensive relative to used cars. Here is a good video explanation:
Why Are Used Compact Tractors So Expensive?!? TMT (our first three minute thursday) - YouTube

If you can find (see) a local tractor for sale good, if not be aware that most crags list adds end up being scams which results in it taking a lot of effort to find a good used tractor.

It is very hard to find used tractors with HST. For 1-2 acres you will want HST.

Almost all dealers offer 0% financing and rotate through different discounts for packages and good warranty.

Just some thoughts

I have 5 acres and absolutely love my LS mt125 TLB. You can get one brand new w/ loader and 60" MMM for about $14k. Delivered. Add the backhoe and your about $16.5k. Google "RCO tractor" , they list all the prices and specs. A lot of used CUT's sell used for more.

Just thinking out-loud..... When it comes time to build the house, how about a walkout basement facing the east or southeast? Or maybe a berm house? The contractor would move the hill for next to nothing, when building/grading the new house. It looks like a nice location for something other than a ranch style house, if that was your plan.

Thanks everyone..

Bigtiller. I'm considering all possibilities and the east hill would be a great place for a walk out as you pointed out. But even though I could afford a basement (only good for storage and mechanicals imo), I'm all about cheap and missing the tax man so I can afford to travel during my retirement years.. I need a big drive way to park trucks, a camper, trailer etc, and I'm more of a gear head type than hobby farmer.. I need a big tall garage with one corner a studio apartment.. Sorry kids. All of my ideas require level ground and Im going as far as to consider pouring a stem wall to push the new garage to the east just to gain more flat driveable space.. The barn is a better location for my garage, but its to nice to tear down.

Yeah man, it is great and I finally have something to look forward to. Iv lived all over red.. Country, town, ships, different countries etc. Where I come from, I don't need permission to call things whatever I like. Second, I call my place a farm because at one time, it was one of the only working farms around there thank you.

Thanks for that.. Supply and demand. HST..

The little craftsman LT1000 which came with my property (pretty sure it's HST but slows down going up hills) has handled the mowing out there, so no reason to change unless you have new needs, or the tranny is about to smoke. How much money I could save by buying a tractor with a FEL, backhoe or auger is negligible. But when wanting to build ones own house. Not so much.. I did notice a implement dealer only 3 miles from me. Maybe I should ask about the 0% because my credit stinks.

I'm fully convinced I need one of these mini telehandlers.:licking::laughing: Looks like it has a 3 point and pto?

For your hilly terrain, you definitely need a 4wd tractor. For snow movement, you need some turning brakes because steering on snow/ice is almost impossible. You can get some steering with turf tires, but they aren't very good for FEL work. I'd vote for an FEL because they're excellent as a diesel powered wheel barrow. Most can be easily disconnected from the lift arms for when you want to run your mower or bush hog or trimmer rear mower.

You do not need weight for snow movement nor mowing nor for moving stuff about on your property with an FEL. A 1200 # tractor with 400 # or so FEL on it or rear snow blower would do fine. You might need chains for that somewhat hilly driveway. R4s may do.

So, any tractor with turning brakes like a B Kubota or 2 series JD or similar would do.

With such a terrain, you DO NOT want a SCUT with underbelly hydraulic fans unless you put a shield underneath. Most SCUTS, except for the JD 1 series, which I found to be a piece of junk, do not have turning brakes.

A ZTR would do your mowing, and a good snow blower would do your driveway. Just hire a bush hogger to clear the rest of the property of saplings and briers about every other year. You could do your front lawn and a little bit in back with a self-propelled walkbehind mower.

I agree with newbury re hiring a bulldozer or even a Bob Cat with FEL; they'll do the digging a whole lot better than a tractor. Then get a smaller, good garden tractor. My JD 4010 (now a 2019E, if they sold them) was a good garden tractor. Need turning brakes for gardening and snow moving.

The 2025R would be a good one but perhaps overpriced. I'd look at a Kubota B, smallest with turning brakes that you can get.

Ralph

That must be one heck of a big garden you have! :D
