'Got a question , simple as it may be .
I'm slowly in the process of "gathering" up some attachments for my cc7264 , 26hp diesel.
When "horsepower required" is listed for various implements, is that listing engine hp or pto hp ? (when not specified)
Thanks,
GrayBeard

Graybeard, I think you'll find that means PTO horsepower.

Yes, really simple question, but simple questions open the bugs of 'some' manufacturers more-

There is no such a rule in any engineering industry like "when not specified" - Everythings should be specified especially when the users are farmers whose minds are busy with biology applications (growing the plants, etc.) But, many implement manufacturers's systems aren't complete organizations without qualified technical employee, without well-equipped customer services, etc etc. So, it's normal farmers often face such things especially if the items are implements.

Now, I will try to answer your question like a farmer who don't want to take any responsibility of product of an implement MFG; I'd take that "not specified hp" as "pto hp" BECAUSE an implement MFG should give ONLY pto hp as an input to his implement. Engine HP isn't in the business of an implement mfg.

GrayBeard,
Bird's answer is what is normally correct. Don't pay any attention to Nomad's babble.

(Jerry and PineRidge) yours are understandable feelings by all silently viewing, reading and thinking people..

Back to topic and let horsepowers speak.

nomad,

I like the way you describe it: "an implement MFG should give ONLY pto hp as an input to his implement". You may be able to answer my query: Suppose I have a 23 pto hp tractor and a 25 pto hp implement, will it damage the tractor if I hook them up? Or, suppose I hook up a 30 pto hp tractor to a 25 pto hp implement, would that damage the implement?

Sometimes I have wondered how critical the match between pto and implement hp actually is. Can you or another member advise me?

William, you have to read the specs for the implement. If the manufacturer says it "requires" 30 hp, you can certainly use it on a 25 hp tractor, but may not have enough power to be satisfied with the results. For instance, a rotary cutter that calls for 30 hp may work just fine in grass behind a 25 hp tractor, but may not be good in high weeds or brush behind a tractor that small. I think you will more frequently find the horsepower rating for the implement to mention a range of horsepower; i.e., 25 to 40, in which case they are "recommending" a tractor with horsepower in that range. You will also find many that list a specific horsepower gear box. For instance, it may say a rotary cutter has a 40 hp gearbox. In that case, you can use it behind any smaller tractor that has enough power to do the job, and of course you can use it behind a larger tractor if you wish, and may be very happy with it, but if you tear up that 40 hp gearbox using it behind a tractor with more than 40 hp, the manufacturer may not warranty it. In other words, if they say it has a 40 hp gearbox or a 100 hp gearbox, they're staying that's the maximum power you can use and them still guarantee it won't break.

As a rule of thumb.. if it is a pto powered implement.. if it lists pto required.. that is pto hp required.. If it is some other type of attatchment.. say a plow.. figure that as drawbar hp required.. I.E. hp that is available at the wheels for pulling a load.. etc. You'll also find other big implenents like loaders and backhoes may have an engine hp as well as weight and size requirements too.
