Hi guys,
Just wondering what the PTO HP requirement for an IH 440 square baler is? Or any other conventional square baler? Thanks in advance,

Glenn

40 hp on rolling terrian or 35 on level--may cheat a little on hp if you have 4x4 --Ken Sweet

So if my calculations are correct, I should be able to run an IH440 baler from an IH 384 tractor with 36PTO-HP on flat ground? Or from an IH 454 tractor with 40 PTO-HP on hills?

I bale with an IHC 300 rowcrop & a NH 270 baler - about 36 hp. Works well on my hills with a hayrack behind too.

In addition to hp, you want a tractor heavy enough to pull and more importantly stop everything. The plunger on the baler can really rock a light tractor.

Paul,

What would you estimate the weight of your 300 is (are the rears filled?) You did say "row crop" i.e. a Farmall, not an IH 300 Utility, right?. I see "dry" weights listed for the old Super H/300/330 series anywhere from the high 3's to mid 5's. (3,800 lb. - 5,500 lb.)

I have no extra weight on the tractor. It is the larger row crop style, not the smaller utility. I've always been confused by the Farmall/International thing, as it says International on the side of it! :)

The baler is a good one, but not the newer high-capacity style. I put about 120 bales on the hayrack, sometimes more. Just started using a hay basket last year, that's about 110 bales. That tractor & baler have been paired for about 40 years, 2-5,000 bales a year. The TA is nice, to have several slow speeds & shift on the go - sort of.

Fellow who's haying my place now uses an "H" for the rake, but is baling (big round baler, didn't catch the model) with a big IH 856 (100 PTO HP, probably goes around 11,000 lb the way he has it set up.

Not going to be confused for a compact.

Would love to have a "good" reason to have an old letter or hundred-series Farmall around (outside of just because /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif) but actually regularly using a tractor of that vintage gives me pause everytime I read of a farmer flipping one. (Still happens around here all too often. /w3tcompact/icons/sad.gif)

I believe there are ROPS out there for the oldtimers but that just "looks" so wrong. If you don't have one on yours, keep the shiny side up!

You have the narrow or wide front end on yours?

Hi timb--If you could overcome your concerns with the Narrow Front?--I would like to show you a "M" Farmall that I just took in on trade--it is unusual, in that it has Power Steering and very good original sheetmetal--We mowed about 10 acres with a (pull type) 10 ft Brush Hog with it and I was amazed how easily it handled it--I have a couple neighbors that are using the old M Farmalls to pull a small round hay baler (4x4 or 4x5)with no problems----Ken Sweet

Not to get too far off-topic, but the old Farmalls surely are nostalgic. Nearly every day I pass by a narrow-front "C" for sale that's been parked for some time at a nearby intersection. Have no idea what condition it's in mechanically, but it's got fresh paint, tires, and decals. Seeing it in the sunshine last summer I told my wife I should buy it for a lawn ornament if nothing else. For a minute I thought she was actually going to say go ahead!

How do you like the hay basket? I"ve been thinking of buying some of them for this year.

We ran an IH 46 pto bailer off a farmall super c , its 20hp or under if i remember right, you had to pop it neutral some times if it got real heavy, but worked good for years, but baling with the ih 560 diesel is alot nicer with the independent pto and the extra weight and hp.

My ihc 300 is wide front (horrible turning radius with that, but probably good for the baler pto!), TA, 2-point, 3 hydraulics on the distributor pump, & power steering. I have mostly older tractors, but I'll save those discussions for www.ytmag.com, this place is about compacts, which I'm looking at buying...I really like the hay basket (self-loading hayrack, not a bale catcher for a thrower). It doesen't handle sharp corners with slippery stuff, but not a big issue. I learned to back up to the barn with the baler & basket, so no unhooking.--->Paul

I've used a gas Fordson Dexta with an IH 430,when my loader tractor was busy. It was o.k. even in hills, but the plunger sure shook the tractor at certain times.

I'd say 40 hp would do the 440 o.k. I'd be looking for weight though too.

What exactly is the hay basket? Is it for picking up bales on the ground?

I use a baler with a kicker, and pull a kicker wagon behind it. That set up is fine on flat ground, but some of my hayfields are on hills, and I just don't feel safe towing the baler and kicker wagon on the hills. If there's something that picks bales off the ground for you, it would make my life a lot easier!

By the way, Rambler, we do have a Vintage Tractor forum. I run vintage tractors myself. So feel free to put in your two cents about older or vintage tractors!! And don't worry about questions that are about other than compact tractors. A lot of TBN members don't even have a compact tractor. I don't. I think TBN has expanded way past dealing with exclusively compact tractors. ANY tractor questions are appropriate!!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Rich,

A hay wagon is for balers that don't have kickers. It's essentially the same thing as your kicker. The bale wagon has a ramp that comes off of the baler and the baler force pushes the bales up the ramp and drops them into this hay basket.

There are machines that will pick up your hay off the ground. They are called hay stackers. It's an independent machine that you drive around and pick up the bales. It puts them in a stack on the machine and then you go and put them where you want. They are pretty expensive though and you rarely will find any of them very far from the west. The reason being that in the west everything is stacked outside because there is little moisture. Once you get to the midwest and east then there is too much rain to stack hay outside. They are also a little pricey for a small operation.

I'll try to include a pic of my haybasket. Cowboydoc describes it all pretty well. The whole back endgate swings out & dumps on the ground. You remove the baler chute, put on a hitch that is _directly_ below the center of the bales, and away you go!NH makes several models of bale pickup wagons & trucks for picking bales off the ground. Some only hold 66 bales - some ~100, and are pulled with a tractor. But they have lots of hydraulics & are very spendy & require repairs.... Then they have bigger self-propelled models.--->Paul
