Can the HST fluid level be too high or is it just a fluid reservoir for the hydraulic system?

It can't be "too High", unless spilling out the filler and breather ports is an issue.

I am sure there are "some tractors" that the HST does not share the sump with the bull gears /PTO drive etc. But not many.....

On my small MF all hydraulics and power steering start (with pump) at HST and returns to HST as the sump....

As for being to high, probably not a problem unless its puking out a vent or filler tube...

Thanks for the comments.
I had the fluid changed by the dealer about a year ago. This is my first time to check it since then.
My dipstick shows the fluid level about 3/4 of the length of it. The 2 marks (I guess for Full and Low) are are much lower.

At a minimum, the HST needs a certain oil level to maintain a pressure head to the pump. The transaxle case volume is fixed so on the high side, you don't want it to flow out when hot (expanded) and tilted on a slope. It is probably just fine.

BTW- the transaxle oil change is the most important service your tractor can get. Even more important than the engine oil. Keep doing it religiously as the HST is the weak link in machine life.

Been on this website to know that someone filled their "standard" L to the top, had to take 3 gallons out to get it in specs. I lost a connection between a hose to the cooler... drove the tractor back to the barn and filled up 2.5 gallons, no problem.

My tractor normally take 7 gallons to fill... I keep mine at roughly a gallon "over-filled" and no problems for 15 years....

Do we check hydraulic fluid level hot or cold?
Doesn't much matter. Often the sight gauge or dipstick for trans/hydraulic oil will have different level marks for hot or cold. If not, then it is probably meant to be read cold.

That's because the level when hot is a guessing game based on on how hot the oil is and how much that heat has transferred to and expanded the tanks and hoses.

Same for cold readings, with the uncertainty is the outside temperature. On our JD, the cold level in the sight glass varies a good inch from morning to summer day.

amazing how much that level changes.

Your OM probably details how to correctly read the level for your tractor.

The HST is also the reservoir for my tractor's hydraulic system. The oil level varies a lot based on which attachments are on and position of the cylinders.
