I'm looking to replace my HST transmission on my Kubota B7200 HST. Does the HST gasket go on dry or should I put some sort of gasket tack on the mating surfaces? Thanks in advance for the replies.

The only time I've ever used any spray on a head gasket is if I think it might slip when I set the head back on. If the block has studs sticking out or position tins to hold the gasket in place I wouldn't spray the gasket.

I think it should seal with an O-ring, that being the case do not use anything:)

If the gasket mating surface is clean as new and dry, and is not warped, I have never used a gasket sealer.

The transmission filter on an L48 is metal-to-metal with machined surfaces on the trans and on the filter - no rubber O-ring.

The point is that the manual does not call for any sealant or such for the application. Oddly, it doesn't leak. Unfortunately, it takes a come-along and pipe wrench to get it off.

If you have a rubber O-ring then a bit of clean oil on the ring will keep it from binding on install.

I'm guessing that you forgot the word "filter" in the first sentence of the OP.

No I actually meant that I am changing the transmission in my Kubota, and where the transmission and the rear end get split apart, there is a big paper gasket that is sandwiched in between. Just wondering if you would put it on dry or w/ a spray on gasket tack or might they clog some of the hydraulic passages.

Ohhhh....sorry for the confusion.

I'd call a Kubota dealer and ask. All they could say is "we won't tell".

There are some Kubota techs that are members of TBN so they should be arriving shortly with valid information and recommendations. Other members may contribute their screen names so you can send them a private message. SweetTractors comes immediately to mind. Ken Sweet is very helpful.

Good luck on your project.

Yes, I use sealer. Permatex ultra-gray or Kubota's sealer if I happen to remember to get some, on both sides of the gasket. At first I thought you were talking about the HST case halves and the answer would have been No. The newer machines only use sealer, no gasket.

Being that it's a dry paper gasket without its own sealant, then yes I agree to use a compatible sealant, *lightly* applied (you don't really want to interfere with the gasket compression or have gobs of it coming off).

I know this stuff is kinda outdated, but for something like this I'd be tempted to grab my fat little bottle of Permatex Form-a-Gasket ("gorilla snot") and lightly coat both sides. It ain't pretty, but the stuff's worked great for me for years. I use various RTVs and other stuff too, but they tend to be more application-specific, whereas the snot is kinda my general go-to for areas that aren't really seen much, and that I don't plan to be pulling apart again anytime soon (if ever).

You're not the only one who uses Form-A-Gasket. I have the same bottle sitting on my shelf in the Man-Cave! I've also been known, or cursed at, for using Gasket Shellac. The problem with that stuff is you almost need a sledge hammer if you ever need to take things apart again.
