HST gasket replacement- dry or w/ sealer

You're not the only one who uses Form-A-Gasket. I have the same bottle sitting on my shelf in the Man-Cave! I've also been known, or cursed at, for using Gasket Shellac. The problem with that stuff is you almost need a sledge hammer if you ever need to take things apart again.
Heheh, you got that right. That, and being impervious to dang near everything, is what makes them such great sealants though... but like I was saying, best for a repair you never intend to make again.

The nice thing about RTV-type sealants is they come off easier.

Being that it's a dry paper gasket without its own sealant, then yes I agree to use a compatible sealant, *lightly* applied (you don't really want to interfere with the gasket compression or have gobs of it coming off).

I know this stuff is kinda outdated, but for something like this I'd be tempted to grab my fat little bottle of Permatex Form-a-Gasket ("gorilla snot") and lightly coat both sides. It ain't pretty, but the stuff's worked great for me for years. I use various RTVs and other stuff too, but they tend to be more application-specific, whereas the snot is kinda my general go-to for areas that aren't really seen much, and that I don't plan to be pulling apart again anytime soon (if ever).

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, once I do this swap out, it WILL be the last time I'm separating these parts. So Form-A-Gasket it is.LOL!

Be very very careful using any sealer. Any little piece that gets squeezed to the inside and then possibly slough off inside the motor will ruin your new motor in a heart beat.:ashamed:

With any sealer I like to use the wife's credit card to scrape all off that will come off in one quick swipe. Silver stripe doesn't need to be up. That usually leaves just the right amount on so it never gets in any orifices. That which squeezes out is of no value.

That's why I tried to stress *lightly* applied - just put a thin film on both sides of it.
Besides, any excess snot that breaks loose won't get past a strainer or filter to get into any work circuits. It would just float around until the next hydro change, and since it never really hardens, it can't really interfere with anything. I wouldn't worry about it unless there are gobs and gobs of it.

What excess snot usually does is slowly ooze along the surface of the part it's applied to, and then eventually firms up in place - think like a thick paint drip running down a wall and drying. It rarely breaks loose or forms blobs, unless you went way overboard... it's unaffected by oil so the oil can't really wash it away.

Cool. Might want to get yourself some denatured alcohol (WallyWorld, HomeDepot, Lowes, etc. in the paint sections) for cleanup. Rubbing alcohol works too, but slower/more work. It thumbs its nose and laughs at just about every other kind of solvent. :D

Another tip - trying to coat both sides of a large gasket at once before you put it on could spell disaster... stuff's really tacky. You might do one side, stick it in place, then do the other side, and finish the assembly.

Thanks for all your help. Probably be attempting this in about a month. Finishing up on some other projects at the moment.
