HST or man

The HST is a must. Sometimes my wife will help me when some of the work requires me to get off the tractor frequently. She will dry while I chain or what ever. I used my old man's Massey Ferguson 135 and she couldn't help me with it because she couldn't back it up and keep the clutch pushed in and keep the brakes held on the other side of the tractor. She would stand up but didn't have enough weight to keep it held. With the HST she can back it up and just take her foot off until I get it hooked up. I do like the safety feature of if she is on it and gets a little freaked out she can just take her foot off and it stops. I couldn't imagine using a gear drive doing loader work. I have always had plenty of power and ended up loosing traction before power.

I am ready to purchase a Grand L 5030 with FEL. The only thing is I cannot decide on the HST or GST transmission. That is why I try to keep this discussion going. The dealers in my area say that all around the GST is best, but if you are going to do a lot of loader work go HST. It’s just the pedal is to close to the seat for me and I don’t like the brake pedal set-up or the RPM requirements. Most of the time GST would be just fine I like changing gears and the using the shuttle, I am driving a 50 year old Oliver 550 now, its just when you need precise control you can’t beat HST. I am thinking go ahead and get the HST I won’t regret it, but if I got the GST there will be times I wish I had gone HST.Sorry to bring this up subject up again it’s a tuff choice

It sure is nice to be able to post a question and get
all kinds of answers each direction and civil ones
at that. TBN has long been know for somehow keeping
things friendly.

But now that we discussed HST vs Gear vs GST etc

how about

Demo vs Republican
Catholic vs Protestant
Socialism vs anarchy...

Ah the rest of the world can have those discussions, I'd
rather go dig up a stump!

Wall,

For me I equate HST as being safer and maybe more convenient for dealing with hills.

A second advantage is with VERY SLOW operation, where you need to creep up to, or past something, at a very slow speed.

I am beginning to doubt that once you get used to your tractor, that HST or GST will make any huge difference with loader work.

If the land you are dealing with is pretty flat, the GST will probably suit you just fine. [looked at your profile buy it doesn't tell much about you or your possilble needs...].

If you are getting along fine with a gear tractor the HST may not offer you a lot of advantage...

When easing up to something that I want to get real close to without destroying it, I have many times told myself I was glad to have an hst. Not that one could not do the same with a clutch, just much easier with the HST.

Hope this does not sound like I am talking in a circle! /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Without knowing anything about you or your needs I just get this feeling that the GST will work well for you.
