If I remember correctly it has the start safety switch in there somewhere and there is no need to run the tranmission when not moving. So if I'm understanding this correctly, it makes zero difference if the pedal is up or down with extended periods of running but not moving?

good thing is $5 and 20 mintues of my time to prevent bending over

It really makes no difference. If you're off the tractor, you should be in neutral range or have the clutch locked so that the tractor doesn't accidently move. Not that I ever do it, but that's the safe way! Another good reason for keeping your setup, you can lock the clutch in when you get off while the tractor is running.

The clutch will stick if it is left unlatch for extended periods of time. I don't see that it would be a problem if it was to be latch anytime that you were not using the drive train. Just that there is no need to latch it, but it won't hurt anything.

with the pedal depressed for running...will wear the throw out bearing pretty shortly...i would let the trans input shaft turn..i would hate to have to put a TO bearing in one of these things /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

One bad thing about locking the clutch down when the unit is running, for extended periods of time, is that you will wear your throw-out bearing pre-maturely. To repair it you would need to split the tractor, not cheap. A better thing would be to lock the brake, if you are afraid you'll bump something and move while climbing on the tractor.

That is a good point. I went back and he did say that he was hooking it while running the backhoe.

Is it normal for the PTO shaft to rotate slowly in neutral... I lock my clutch in for that reason ...cag

On a lot of tractors it is. On some it is caused by fluid friction. It doesn't hurt anything.

You're right Jerry, he did say he locked it while using the backhoe. I was referring to quick trips off the tractor where it wouldn't be a problem, but a long time of using the backhoe is not advised.
Of course, it just takes a second to move the range lever to neutral for those occasions of long term running, not moving.
