Buying Advice HST vs Gear Transmission - which would you recommend on this tractor ?

I hardly ever put it in low range. It’s got adequate power in medium for most jobs. The few times I would hit low I don’t care about the amount of work done. Rather I’m moving at 2 mph or 3 mph makes no difference. And the M59 along with most other larger HST machines runs without whining.

No just sick of corona news, and yes I think it is funny how people get so wound up on my tractor is better then your tractor stuff.......

There was nothing scientific or even meaningful about that test. There was more flaws and wrong methods than anything done right.

I guess my point about the video and the results is so what. The test is pointless. It痴 like pushing the two tractors off a cliff and saying the gear tractor is better, it hit the ground first. Both have advantages but I think for the average smaller tractor owner a HST is a better choice but that doesn稚 mean a gear tractor is a bad choice either.

I agree it was a bad test example. The test should have been better planned to give realistic comparable results. Expect better from Messicks. I own and use both in tough, abusive conditions. Same tractor with each transmission, Same weight, same tires, same surface and with a skilled operator they can pull about the same. HST looses 5-10% HP from transmission loss but can easily make that up in real world application being quicker back and forth. Be hard to find modern forestry and earth moving equipment not hydro.

Yes, the real disappointment of that test was who performed it. I expected better from Messicks. A lot better. It is one thing for some jack-wagon to hook his old tractor to a Christmas tree and let it beat the heck out of him and quite another for one of the most respected names in the business to do an absolutely totally unscientific piece of crap like that.

I don稚 bush hog at the same speed. I speed up for light grass and slow down for heavy grass and bumps.

Same for me. With my little 2501 I would have to constantly be clutching a gear tractor when I hit heavy vegetation. With the HST i just let my foot up off the tredle a little and mash it back down when I get through the heavy stuff. This is the first HST tractor I've ever owned and am actually surprised how much I like it. Using the fel there is no comparison between the gear and HST.
