Not sure what the gouging law is called, but as I recall the consumer protection stuff is under the dept of Agriculture in FL. If that makes any sense /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Was that a 'real' reading or an estimated reading? It's often seemed to me that the utility companies deliberately over-estimate (most around here read every other month) then 'correct' on the actual reading month. Yeah - the bill comes out the same in the end, but actually it doesn't - we're floating the utility a little helpful cashflow that way. Might be my imagination, I never really dug out all the records and did a stat analysis but it's something that's always bugged me about the billing patterns.

Tim,
The water company here estimates the other way. That way when they do read the meter I am up into the surplus charge zone and pay more per gallon. I suspect they would go broke if they stopped this practice. Talked to the county attorney about it the other day (election coming up) about it, have to wait a week or so to see what he turns up. Might go back to cistern supply have a 5,000 gal one, with plenty of inflow from the roofs. Just hate getting ripped off.

I don't pay estimated bills, but I do call the electric company and give them the actual reading and get a corrected bill. I don't like estimates, because they are never correct. Since the electric company has gone to the new meter system, all they have to do is drive by the house and it picks up the readings. Haven't had a estimated bill since they went to this system. In winters past, the meter reader didn't want to be out in the cold.

Junkman,
My electric is now current, they read the meter from the Co-op office. Pretty neat as long as it works.

As long as I lived out in the country, we had to read our own meters and send the readings in when we paid the last bill. They were supposed to have someone come by to check on the readings twice a year, but told me sometimes they didn't get around to it but once a year.

For what it's worth . I had the same thing happen a few years ago . My electric bill was three times its nomal rate . Turned out the connection lugs had become loose where the electric dropped into the meter box . An electrican came out and fixed it and the power rate returned to normal .
