I had WildBlue satellite internet, and while it was nowhere near as good as DSL, Cable, or fiber optic, it beat dial up by a large margin.

I never had any of the troubles people have had with Hughes.

In fact, the only real problem I had came before it was installed. The local people told me that I needed a clear view of the sky at a bearing of 134 degrees, and when I checked, there was a large tree right in the way. So, I cut the tree down before they came out, and when the tech came out he aimed the dish pretty far off from where the tree had been. Turns out I was using a bearing based on true North, and the doofuses at the local provider used magnetic North as their reference.

I've had hughes net for several years now. Overall it hasn't been all that bad. It sure beats dialup, hands down. I'm on my original modum, but I did have to replace the transmitter on the dish once. Hughes has tried to get me to upgrade my modum for a couple years, but it works and it's paid for. Wild blue is similar to hughes. I don't like the FAP policy, I think the policy itself is not very fair, but it is what it is.
I now have verizon 3G in addition to hughes. It helps when I get FAP'd.

You just have to deal with the installers.

I wonder if any problem or complaints with hughes net might be just the installers' doing. I had a brother who has hughes net, had a few problems when it was first installed, but for the last few years, not nearly as much problems as one of our daughter's verizon dot net (not wireless, but wired phone and DSL service).

I think we will be ok the dealer was closed all day today. I do like the fact they are where we can corner them up and make them do right. I talked to the neighbor acroos the street and they seemed to enjoy it. We have Cable lines run in front of the house but since we have Direct TV they wont let us buy internet service from them. But now theywonder why I wont give them an easment to cross my place now.

I just tried to set up one of the tether to cell phones that the Verizon store said would work with my cell phone. I need it for a real estate buying trip I am making out to OK so I don't need a two year service plan. I could get the service on a month to month basis and it would be as fast as an air card. After calling tech help to start the service they walked me through the set up process. When it came to loading the drivers for the phone they determined that there was no driver support for Windows 7, for any of their cell phones. Really? How long has 7 been out? They then tried to sell me an air card for more money and a contract plan.

Internet is usually an add on to the cable service. I'm sure the cable company would be glad to sell you cable service and then internet service, even if you have Direct TV.

I used Wildblue for several years without an ounce of trouble... several months ago we switched over to Sprint's aircard and have been very satisfied... if the aircard is not an option for you, I highly recommend Wildblue..

I agree - I have DirectTV and had DirecWay (Hughes) for a year before cable was brought out our way. Old POTS lines were horrible. I have the basic cable (TV) with internet. Never use the TV - not even sure it works with the whole analog to digital conversion - but price was still cheaper than sat. So if you can get the cable for around the same price, I say do it

As far as Satellite - as others have said, pros and some major cons. Installer is key. I had 3 different companies come out early on - all were horrible - most were car audio installers. I finally got a guy, retired Navy Chief, worked on the same base (as contractor) that I did. He knew his stuff. He told me if I needed a service call, to call it in and I could request his company - and they did. Not sure if they still do.

Taylor you just threw a curve into the whole thing. If you have access to cable TV and cable internet that is the way I would go. Much more stable and faster internet than satellite. I don't understand what you mean when you say the cable people will not let you buy internet because you now have Direct TV, I didn't think you had it yet?

I'd use the ROW as a pawn to get the cable.
I bet it will work if you talk to the right guy.
