Martin,
In my old days - different continent and different country
- I was a boy scout and later a boy scout leader and we would go camp for a month every summer, camping outside and all the cooking was done using wood - and all the wood was cut with hand saws and axes. Sure there was many times I chopped down a tree with an axe as needed. It was part of the fun and training including building structures and shelters for the camp. There were tools owned by the pack - but every kid had to take an axe and pliers of their own - to be able to build the tent and what not.
When we moved to where we live now, there was a lot of trees down - about 6 - 8" - and since back than I didnt have chain saw I was working out 3 times a week chopping them into 8 feet long pieces for burning. There is something about knowing how to use an axe.
And by my outdoor fire place there is a pile of maple to be splitted. I use wood granade for big pieces and long axe for smaller one; all my life I done it this way, I enjoy it more than pushing iron in the gym.
