always goes into every gear.. however sometimes setting from a cold start.. at low idle.. it will not go into ANY gear.. atr all.. till idle comes up.

Are you talking about the forward / reverse shifter or the speed selector?

I'll assume it is the speed selector and not the for/aft shuttle shifter.

The F-N-R shifter moves a collar with tabs on it. the tabs have to align with the tabs in the F or R gear
so sometimes you have to let the clutch out to rotate the collar before it will engage.
that's why i asked which you think it is. The adjustment on the shifter will move the pivot plate so that the belt will engage sooner or later. Park position takes the tension off the front drive belt so the engine pulley doesn't grab.

shuttle lever seems to always work fine.. just sometimes at very very low idle, on a restart.. she will have no gear engagement at all, rev her up and try a gear and no problem.. that's what initially made me think it might be some sort of semi - hydro...
