I am finally ready to do the repair/rebuild of my K46 and wondering if anyone has seen this package:

Seems like a better price than direct from Tuff Torq, but, curious if it has everything I'll need.

Don’t know if I mentioned it in this thread, but last year I rebuilt my k46 with a kit direct from TT. Kit looks like what you posted, however, with all the variations in k46 models I would not trust an eBay kit. Repair kit was in $500 price range, included new hydraulic pump and motor, the block they attach to, (the damage happens on the surface between pump, motor and block),

new oil, seals, etc. everything needed.

I picked up a Husky LGT 54 a few years back for free with a bad trans. I was coming back from the dump one day and noticed a dead Husky lawn tractor in a junk pile by a house. I offered them $20 for it and hauled it home. The lawn tractor had been beat to death. It had a hole in the block and the deck was all broken and rusted out. I assumed with the rest of it in that bad of shape the trans must have still been pulling when it died.

Me and my SIL swapped the lawn tractor trans into the garden tractor. I didn't even change the oil in the junker. It has been going for 3 years under my daughter and she literally beats the crap out of it. She calls it her mini bush hog. Mostly mows the weeds around their pond with it. She loves that it has a brush guard on the front. When she bogs it down in the mud it gives her something to grab to pull it out with.

It's hard to figure why one K46 dies an early death and another can't be killed.

Thanks folks. The person I bought the kit from, Timbertuff, confirmed the exact/right kit (with oil) and he's sold 12,560 with 99.9% positive rating. I feel good that this will work.

And TractorGuy, I'm envious. I was trying to do the same exact thing - to find a mower with the right tranny with a blown engine. No dice. So, after almost 3 years of just limping along and maybe being able to mow half my flat lawn at a time, I'm throwing down the $426 and getting it done proper. And I will NEVER tow anything other than leaves.

The K46 I swapped had a slightly different number but I don't remember the difference. I think the GT had a K46A and the LT had a K46C or something like that. I read somewhere that the later K46 had some upgraded part to make them more reliable. Most of the measurements were the same. The GT hubs fit right on the LT axles. I just had to swap all the mounting spacers and stuff over.

My K46 in the Black Craftsman Professional has been very good for over 10 years now. Changed the oil in it once cause it was slow on the hills (and changed the belt at the same time). Has worked fine since. Tow a trailer no problem and haul a 2 bagger system on it too. Been a great K46 tractor for sure.

So, I rebuilt the tranny, with the kit I bought mentioned above from "Timberturf" on Amazon/ebay - Genuine OEM Tuff Torq Transmission Repair Kit 1A646099571 K46 L, M, W, AW | eBay . Pretty sure I followed the "directions" on all the videos I watched and reading "LotsofGreenGrass"s detailed post, filled tranny reservoir with the Tuff Torq fluid all the way up to about 3/4" from the top, capped it, reinstalled and ....NOTHING.

Didn't bolt wheels back on as I wanted to test it while up on jack stands. Actually, the wheels turned once, a revolution or two, but, nothing really. Wonder what I missed? I watched an hour and 13 minute long video that was incredibly detailed on a JD with a K46. Almost everything was 1:1 to my K46, (except for the IDS - mine doesn't have it). Interestingly, at the end of the video, the guy got a drill with a large socket and spun the shaft (that is what the drive belt spins when installed in machine). He did this a few minutes, forward and reverse. His axles spun immediately, but, did say this helps bleed out air. He made the "test spin" sound more like it was just interesting to see while it was on the bench. Wondering if that's what I didn't do.

When I spin the end of the axle(s) by hand, where the wheel bolts on, it just spins free & easy, on both sides. Virtually no resistance.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you,

Jay

I'm wondering if I screwed up when re-installing the motor cylinder block with that little metal "pin" that is actuated when you pull the release lever from the rear of the mower, so that you can "free wheel"? I did put a dab of grease on the pin so it would 'stick' in place and it was protruding slightly when I put the motor (with washer) back in against the Motor Housing, on that axle with the brake rotor on it... But, just where it seems like actuating the release lever, and re-engaging it - while spinning the wheel hubs - makes no difference.

Could it do this if it was low on oil? I did fill, as mentioned, to within 3/4" from top of fill-hole. But didn't bleed any air, didn't test spin the pulley shaft. Maybe, as the oil circulated through the internals of the tranny, the oil level dropped??

Sounds like I need to take the tranny out of the machine and back to the bench to figure things out - just hoping I'm overlooking something simple.

Thank you,

Jay
