Maybe I read the post a bit wrong . But are you engaging the PTO at idle ?? Mine won't even think about it !
If I misread this ( very likely ) , Check for water , or other contaminents in your fuel . A good place to start is with the fuel filter ,as it's readily accesible on the right hand side of the machine . Another possibility to look at is stale fuel . Hope this is a least of some help .
BTW welcome to TBN ! John

Thanks for the feedback. The guy at the store also suspected a fuel issue, such as moisture. He also recommended using higher-octane (the manual says use 87, so that's what has been going in it). You might be right about the fuel filter. The schedule says I don't have to change it yet, but it was also too conservative on the oil change interval. I cut a couple acres once a week and that seems to dirty up the oil. Do you think dry gas would cut down on the moisture in the tank?

To be honest I don't have much experience with Dry Gas .
But if you suspect water , MR Funnel does the trick to get it out of your fuel . Just make sure You use it BEFORE you treat your fuel . As an over winter additive I'd go with Sta-bil .
It doesn't do a thing for water , etc . But it'll keep the fuel fresh in your mower and fuel cans over the winter .

I know this isn't a very timely response to your question, but I thought I send along this information. I recently purchased a YTH 2248. Same unit as yours, but with a 22hp kohler engine. I was having trouble keeping it running when I engaged the mower blades, and I have noticed a decrease in available power since I first used it (I only have about 10 hours on it). It appears my problem has been wet grass building up under the mower deck. We've had a very wet summer in upstate NY and almost all my mowing has been performed on slightly long, slightly wet grass. I've noticed that occasionally my mower ejection shoot would cough out a chuck of green wet mush. So I reached underneath this weekend and pulled out a large volume of caked up dry (old) and wet (new) grass build-up. My power loss and blade engagement problems were immediately resolved.

I don't know if this will be of benefit to you, but I thought I send it along. Good Luck, Paul

Thanks everyone for your help. The service guy just paid me a visit and found that my right cylinder was not firing, I was running with only the left one! No wonder the engine had a bad time when trying to work the blades. The spark plug was good but the coil has to be replaced. He will be back next week with the new part.
