Tomatoman, welcome to TBN.
Likely probability to the cause of no oil in the engine pump is due to the inlet pipe, larger of the two, is not sealed/seated in the pump. This happens when the suction tube is jarred. The clamp under the fuel tank on the bell housing is supposed to keep it in position.
You can loosen the clamp, remove the pressure line from the pump and remove the pump. Inspect the suction pipe and the sealing oring for damage or signs of being out of position.
If all looks good, grease the oring, reassemble and try, BUT, if the pump has been running dry for any amount of time, it's probably worn out and needs to be replaced.

thanks for the reply i checked pipe no leaks under side just a couple of dings in pipe at bottom ,pipe support showed no sign of moving would have thought the pump would last longer than 3800 hr on tractor.will remove this week and check o ring must not take much of a bump to cause a air leak also is there much trouble replacing the whole suction tube or the o ring if that is problem

An hydraulic pump won't last 38 hours when it's sucking air, let alone 3800. You might get lucky if you pour oil in the adapter that the filter screws on, filling the suction side of the pump. Fill the filter and screw it on as quickly as possible to keep as much oil in it as you can. If there is anything left of the pump, it MAY prime.

I'm confused, but that's normal, OP didn't say his hydraulics aren't working, just that the filter didn't dump oil when he unscrewed it. So are the tractor hydraulics not working?

yes hyd working rear pump working just that eng mtd unit had no oil in filter when changed just dry no trace of oil in it,put new filter on ,ran engine and operated bucket then took off new filter still dry tractor has a loader 7209 with deluxe remotes

Sorry, I'm kinda slow. So again, are you saying hydraulics aren't working on the tractor?? Are all hydraulic functions working properly? :)

What happens when a two pump system has an inoperative engine driven pump is the hitch will work. The remotes will work at reduced flow. The hitch and remotes will not function simultaneously as they would if both pumps were working.
The rear pump provides flow to the hitch and the remotes only if there is no hitch demand. The engine driven auxiliary pump only provides flow to the remote valves.

yes both loader and 3 point hitch but if you try to lift loader while hitch is lifting the loader stops until hitch is at the highest position so is the eng pump still have to have oil pumping

Good stuff Rick. Didn't know that. :)
