Oil & Fuel Hyd oil drain questions

I've got a couple of hundred hours to go before I have to do the transmission fluid on my rig... does the 'run the tractor for a while to warm up the oil' trick work the same for the tranny?

Oh sorry, did not notice. BUT I am sure they have something like a 'tote' in the UK.

Just did a bit of research and I see what you mean now. A more stable container.

I'd say so. Thins the oil for a better flow as well as getting all the bad stuff in suspension.

Ta, Mate. I thought so but, never having done that particular evolution with that particular type of fluid, it never hurts to ask. 'Tricks for young players' & all that.

Personally, I like using 5 gallon buckets, with snap on lids. I have several I use for oil changes, and they make it easy to haul to the oils recycling places. I usually have a couple that I add oil to, from small engine changes, that are sitting in a corner with lids on them. Then after I do the larger changes from tractors, I haul them all in to empty the buckets.

A "tote" is just a large plastic storage container, usually comes with a snap on lid, but we don't need the lids for our purposes. Usually not so tall that they fit nicely under our tractors, yet will easily handle 10 to 15 gallons of fluid, are usually rectangular in configuration and usually pretty cheap to buy, at least over here. They are certainly not made to catch oil by design, but there is no reason they cannot be used for that, and I keep one in the barn just for that nasty purpose.

Perhaps I ought to make it clear that I'm dealing with amenity i.e. football/soccer pitch rather than agriculture.

I did ask for lids for my buckets but there weren't any. Precisely for the sake of transporting them to a recycling area.

When I Goooooooooogled 'tote' I got told about Tote betting and women's handbags!!! :laughing:


It was only at the bottom of the page that I spotted 'tote tanks' and that made a lot more sense!

I just recently changed mine for the first time. I drove the rear wheels up some ramps and put a 5gal bucket under each drain. Worked fine and is cheap. The buckets are everywhere.

Annnnnd... those aren't what I Googled as a 'tote' at all! To me, those are plastic 'storage bins'.

That being said, those would work just fine for the task at hand, James! Ta.
