I have a Kubota L3400 with gear shift . I talked with a serviceman in a local Kubota service department about the 50 hour service requirement. He said that changing the UDT in a gear shift is unnecessary at 50 hours. He says that they don't do it. Said they just change the filter. I read on this forum that it should be changed because of all the metal filings, etc. Wouldn't the filter catch all of the debris? Automatic transmissions in most automobiles never require changing the fluid or the filter. My Toyota manual doesn't mention it at all. Only the quick oil change ripoff artists recommend changing it at 30K mile intervals. If they could get away with it, they would recommend it every 3K miles like the engine oil change.I want to do what should be done but it seems extremely wasteful to throw out 10 gallons of perfectly good hydraulic fluid if it is not necessary. Would it be wiser to buy the oil and filter at 50 hours, change the filter only, and save the oil for 400 hours?

I'd change it @ 50 hrs and get a new serviceman and dealer that doesn't skimp out on important things like this.

All the automobiles I have had recommended changing the tranny lube, whether auto or manual. My subie is a standard shift. It is supposed to be changed every 60-70k or so, I forget the exact number.

if it were my tractor, i'd replace both (fluid/filter). my dealer strongly recommended it (the manufacturer also recommended it).. frankly, i'm surprised that the service dept. wouldn't suggest doing it as part of the 50 hr service.

an ounce of prevention goes a long way..

get 'er done.

I'd do it. It's cheap peace of mind.

I'd go ahead and do fluid and filter for sake of just in case.

I think what we are seeing here is the consumer paying for something the manufacturer should have taken care of, during the manufacturing process. They don't clean all the metal filings out (saves them big bucks) so we do it for them, by way of dumping 10 gallons of (should be) perfectly good oil.

I agree Billy. Can you imagine the roar that would occur if automakers did the same stuff ? Pull off your tranny pan at 1000 miles and a bunch of metal shavings come out......

OK boys I see that I am going to be out of step with the rest of the world with my 2 cents worth. My tractor has two very large filters for the hydraulic system (replacement cost well over $100 - so they must be of good quality). I can't believe that between the two of them that they would not catch any and all trash (large, small, metal shavings etc...) in the system. It seems like a tremendous waste of money to replace the hydro fluid if not needed (does hydraulic fluid wear out?). Yes I agree, replace the filters regularly, based on how severely you use your equipment - not just based on x number of hours. So go ahead and tell me why I am an idiot!

Just remember who forked over the cash for the tractor. Sounds like there idea of not changing the fluid is in there best interest not yours for future uneeded repairs /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif If it were me I would find a new dealer /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

ToJo - I had the same question, Parts Man at Dealers told me to change filter only. Based on recommendations from the Good Heads on TBN, I changed everything at 50 hrs - glad I did. My Hydraulic Oil was evidently compromiosed somehow - see picture - and glad I didn't keep it in for a longer period of time. Compromised (?) oil on the left.

ps: Yours is a standard transmision, mine a HST - maybe affected differently, But why take a chance after investing big money in a new machine?
