smartguyz,

Are the teeth on your chipper/shredder mounted solid with a bolt/nut, and can you reverse them when dull ?

Hi JJ,

The unit I have in the photo is a hammermill shredder, which means that it works by having a chamber with a number (24) of small rotating/spinning hammers, or flails, that spin around on a kind of rotating cage. See the photos below.

The cage can be disassembled, and the 'hammers' (which are really more like hardened pieces of bar stock with holes in them) can be reversed up to 3x. They aren't really sharp - they work by bludgeoning whatever is placed into the chamber with the corner of the bar stock/hammer.

This unit, although it is over 30 years old, actually shows very little wear. That's one reason why I bought it. It looks like someone bought it, used it a few times, and then left it outside for 30+ years until the original unit was just covered in surface rust. When I purchased it, I checked the bearings for play (virtually NONE), and the 'hammers' for use (virtually NONE).

It works really well, and it is identical to the newer ones I see around the city, except for the chipping chamber. The chipping chamber I see on the combo units have 1 blade mounted on a flywheel, and it appears to be removable (I see 2 bolts) and sharpenable. The hammermill, as mentioned, does not require 'sharpening'.

I hope that helps.

-Rob :)

Here's a 'see through' picture to give you another idea of how this thing works.
