hydraulic filter

I believe it is a similiar screen filter as the 200 series, just side mounted vs top. If the tank was clean from mfg (big if), the particles are deposited when the oil returns to the tank. The heavy ones will deposit on the bottom and the others will be drawn into the screen. I have changed mine once (284) and it wasn't a big deal. It didn't appear to have much on the screen, but since I had spares, replaced it, and will clean at a latter date.

PS: The side mounting on the 304/354 makes it a bit more messy.

I can barely spell hydraulix either John. But common sense says the pump is PULLING fluid through a filter on the supply side, which means it would necessarily have to PUSH it through a filter on the return side. Except for the filters/strainers in my water supply and air compressor lines, I can't think of any other application off the top of my head that is a PUSH.

Oops - the Jinma fuel filter is a push, isn't it........?

Look at Northern Hyd and you will see suction side strainers and return line filters.
See attached for pic I was talking about:

Most oil filters on engines are push, correct?

That Northern link cleared things up John. But it appears that a return filter should only be in ADDITION to the supply filter, rather than be considered as a convenient way to replace the existing filter/strainer.

I take that back about the fuel filter. The injector pump pulls fuel through the filter, then pushes cleaned fuel toward the injectors. And I think you're right about engine oil filters though, otherwise bypass valves wouldn't be rated in PSI.

Yes, you need a suction side strainer . The suction side filter on Northern's site, includes a 149 micron screen strainer. Again, not an expert, but think the norm is filter on return line.

If you add a return line filter, I recommend leaving the factory strainer/filter in place.

Just a little note.

All pumps in general require that the piping on the suction side of the pump be as straight as possible before entering the pump. In addition a filter should be installed on the pipe suction side of the pump preventing any foreign material entering and destroying the pump. This is a general rule of thumb. Although the filter should not be located too close to the pump. The pump needs continuous laminate flow of fluid (not turbulent). Turbulent flow or restricted flow is how most pumps fail. So keep the filter clean at all times.

Wouldn't hurt to add one in line to tank. I'm thinking of doing it because of the flimsy filter under the seat. More is better inmy book /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

that filter in the lnik is on the LEFT side, is that taking the return power steering fluid only then? as the photo shows what looks like garden hose not hyd hose for attaching the filter!?

I know John probably didn't take the photo but do you know any more?

Just wondering

Spiker what photo are you looking at? The hydraulic line on my unit is steel.

I'm still interested in the idea of a reurn side filter but how can ya cut the steel return line and attach any fittings.
