Will ask same on Iseki forum, and did so on hydraulic forum...

Need to pull engine and steering cylinder on my 1440V (rusting under chrome plate of ram) so grabbed a JIC 3/8 cap and plug. Duh....they don't quite fit! What standard are the hydraulic fittings made to? BPS???? and if so, why??

JIS would be my guess being that can be mistaken by JIC but would need a picture to be sure. It's the same thread as BSPP fittings but with 60 degree taper is inverted compared to the BSPP fittings.

You need to look at how the fitting seals and also measure thread diameter and pitch. There are just many thread styles to even try and guess anymore.

Examples are BSPP, JIS 30 degree flare, metric, etc.

My Branson has JIS 30 degree flare which looks similar to JIC 37 degree but do not interchange.

Best I can tell after spending an hour looking at things is the steering cylinder is 1/4 BSP (i.e. 0.513" x 19 tpi). Assuming that the male flare is on the hose side and female seat on the male thread fitting for BSP fittings.

The fitting taking 12mm tube to steering box looks to be a 45 degree flare with 20 x 1.5 thread. 10mm Tube coming along frame and under engine to hydraulic pump is same apparent flare angle with 16 x 1.5 thread.

I am assuming the flare fittings are some kind of JIS standard, but really look to be 45, not 30something degrees.

My hose supplier sent a very long list of fitting styles and specs, so pretty much verified my BSP assumptions for the steering cylinder. Grabbed some caps and plugs and in they went. Only scary bit was I had to assume the 19tpi thread pitch by using metric equivalent - since none of my thread gauges included 19tpi. Disastrous visit, though. The guy I have dealt with for last 43 years just up and retired!

The 20mm feed line to steering and 16mm to other side was a little more difficult. I was able to buy 16x1.5 and 20x1.5 nuts so just made some HDPE studs that I parted off into cap and plug lengths. These are not so much to stop leakage as to keep dirt out while apart. I still have to figure out how to effectively drain the tank and large lines to tractor hydraulic pump. I will continue to look for the JIS spec for flares, we be pleased if anyone can find it.
