I just bought a Timberwolf 3pt log splitter /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. It calls for AW-46. I called the Kubota dealer and they want to sell me UDT. When I asked him what weight UDT was he couldn't answer me but said that's what they but in their logsplitters. Does anyone know what weight UDT or Super UDT is? If it is 46 weight would this be better than the hydraulic fluid TSC sells?

Thanks - Foghorn

AW46 Oil definition.

Anti-wear Primary recommendation for hydraulic fluids. Must be products with -AW46 Oil virgin oils with a high viscosity index of at least 95. Containing anti- wear, oxidation, rust and foam inhibitors. Oils must meet ASTM D-943 test of at least 2000 hours and generally conform to Cincinnati Milicron P-68 and P-70 specifications.

The owners of log splitter (Wood Splitters) I have been around used the hydraulic oil they purchased at Tractor Supply. Any hydraulic oil that meets or exceeds the ASTM D-943 test spec will suffice.

UDT, SUDT, UTF are all specced as a hyd fluid. My NH tractors use UTF in their power steering and hyd systems. In my tractors with seperate sumps my manual says i can use 'plain hyd oil' which i take to mean aw32/46 or i can use utf.. Since they cost the same.. I always use UTF...

Thanks guys. I guess I'd still like to know what weight UDT or SUDT is since the manufacture states only AW46 and not AW32.

Find somebody with an HST tractor and talk them out of the hydraulic oil when they make the change. The last time I changed mine it looked like brand new. My neighbor was happy to use it for his splitter and the price was right to him, FREE!

Aw46 is thicker than aw 32.. But .. besides knowing what viscosity UDT / UTF is.. you need to know what viscosity the 32/46 are. If they are straight viscosity oils with no heat index modifiers... you could do a simple test with a viscosity gauge that you can pick up cheap at a pain store... or do a somewhat scientific test using a pipette and timer, measuring leakdown on the oils and thus find a similar viscosity oil.. etc.
