Folks,
Thinking about renting a rockhound and the model says it wants 12 GPM for the 5' model. We're pretty close to that on the TC40D aren't we?

If 9.8 GPM is close to 12 GPM, then yes...you're pretty close /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

NH specs show 9.8 GPM for the hydro pump....

....And continuing the math - that's 81.6% of requirements or about 1/5 short at 2600rpm. Will it just operate slow or will it bog?

Oh....What's a rockhound anyhow? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Is it operated in a stationary mode? If not, some of the hydraulic power will be used to move the tractor.

Mark,
A rockhound is a skidsteer attachment that performs a similar function to a harley rake except that it is on the front and instead of windrowing rocks when preparing a seedbed, it throws the rocks into a bucket on the front end loader. I have 4 acres to prepare and this was a local and low cost option. Might give it a try even though I am a bit short

I think you will be disapointed, we have set up augers and run them of the third function ( front couplers tied to the rear remotes ) it will run it, but slow. Rockhounds need the full flow to fling the rocks into the bucket. Let us know how it works though, I'd be intrested myself.

With 4 acres to do...would it be worthwhile to rent the skidsteer also ????

I know that's near surrender for us tractor owners, but 4 acres is a good sized chunk of work.

Have you ever used a 12+ gpm PTO pump to run a rear or front implement? I'm really curious about that. If you had one with its own reservoir, that seems like a real possibility for many hydraulic powered implements. The convenience and simplicity of running the PTO pump and controlling it ON/OFF with the PTO lever just seems like a really cool idea to me. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I have a machine that runs off of a pto pump. It is the prince 20gpm at 540 model and cost about $350. They are easy to put on and off. My attachment has a hydraulic reservoir that the pump sucks out off. The reservoir is used mostly for cooling the returning fluid.

So is your 9.8gpm rating at full throttle. If so I wouldn’t want to run my tractor full throttle all day. You might consider asking the rental yard if they would let you try it. I did this one time with a trencher. I wasn’t sure it would work in my soil so the yard let me bring it home and try it for free. As it turned out the tencher worked for half the project so I paid them half rental, if it hadn’t worked at all they wouldn’t have charged me anything. It doesn’t hurt to ask.

Lar we thought about doing the very same thing with our TC-40D but the guy at the rental said to expect poor results so we opted to rent the complete package. I hope that it all works out for you. Picking up rocks by hand is no fun at all. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

One thing I noticed browsing through TBN is a whole lot ofCUT owners are farmers wannabes and think they have the machines to do the work, that is especially true for those with the larger ones(JD 4600+,KUB 4300+or NH40+) , in your case you sound like you wanna run your little boomer like it was a TN or even TS series, be serious, 9.8gpm is just a tad more than the pump on a Windex bottle. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
