what is it for? It starts and wraps around under the seat then ties in back close to where it started, why does it have a long wrap around hose when it could just have a short 1 foot loop. I never noticed it until it was hanging real low and I was concerned about snagging it on something.

It sounds like it had been one side of a remote hydraulic. With an open center system you would have to have a loop to keep the fluid flowing.

Is it something that could be hooked to say a log splitter or does it need to stay hooked to the tractor? I will look at it more tomorrowand see what kind of attachments it has to the tractor

Your tractor has had some type of hydraulically driven attachment with a controller and two hoses...when the attachment (log splitter, FEL etc.) was removed, so was one hose and the controller. The remaining hose is necessary to continue the loop for your 3PH.

There would be no problem changing it with a shorter hose and fittings.
