hydraulic hose question

I'm embarking on a new adventure - fixing a leaking steering cylinder on my Ford 2120. It leaks because the rod is bent. In talking to some friends (and their mechanics), the suspicion is that the relief value in the pump may be bad, which would bend the rod (other idea - big stump hit on a sharp turn).

I want to test the relief valve, so I need (want) to buy a pressure guage, insert a tee in the line, and test.

Two questions -
1) It looks like a 1/2" fitting. Can anyone confirm or deny?
2) Is it a 'standard' fitting? i.e. a standard # of threads per inch?

Sorry, I can't respond to either of your 2 questions, but I can tell you I had trouble finding a pressure gauge. There may be a ton of internet sites that sell them (?), but I had trouble finding one locally.

I ended up going to a Grainger outlet in town and they had the 0-3000psi gauge I was looking for. I don't have a tax ID #, but the saleman took pity on me and sold it to me anyway. As I recall, it was about $20-$30.

By the way, once the mechanicals are right, I believe some hydraulic shops can straighten the bent shaft for you. I don't know if it would be cheaper to do that or just buy a new cylinder. Good luck!

I'm heading to Grainger today - just wanted to make sure that the guages they sell are appropriate, and that I ask for the right thing.

I've found an outfit that would straighten the rod, but without any guarantee. They didn't recommend it - just suggested I buy a replacement.

I can't imagine the shaft on that 2120 is much bigger than on my 1920. My buddy with a 1920 bent his, and took it to our local hydro shop... they made him a new shaft. Took a few hours.. acted like it was common and they do it all the time.. welded the old shaft end on and away he went.. not much $$ either...

just an idea.

I got a replacement rod from the local F/NH dealer. $240.. I had called a shop that does hydraulic work, and they said they would straighten it, but didn't guarantee it past the front door. Never thought about having one made.

Do you have any idea what 'not much $$' is?

I recently broke the rod in my extend-a-hoe cylinder.
Deere price $400, next day
Shop made $250, 1 week to make (busy)
Since I was in middle of digging basement I had to go new.
BTW $500 total bill also included kit and labor to assemble.
