hydraulic oil disappearing..

One thing I have seen before and is very hard to find if your not looking right at it. I have seen little pin holes in hoses that dont spray a stream. More of just a mist. If you not looking at it, you wont see it, but you should smell it. If the mist is directed away from the machine, it might not even show up as a streak running down the hose. It also wont spray if there isnt any pressure on the hose when your looking for it. Get someone to operate the hyd while you are looking, what ever you do, dont run your hands over the hoses looking for the leak, That mist is under high pressure and will inject into your skin.

I cracked a steel loader line. I wouldn't consider that something you're going to be oblivious to. It was blowing a fine mist that looked like smoke. When the wind was right it would cover the whole machine in oil. And you could definitely smell it.

ok,i have heard of that before.. i will say i do not smell any hydraulic smell at all usually if there is a leak you can pick up that smell pretty easy.

Be EXTREMELY careful if you suspect a high pressure hydraulic leak. 2,500psi hydraulic oil can inject itself into your skin at several inches. You then can loose limbs because of gangrene due to that contamination.
