I think you are correct, that's why clockwise looking down has to be only way. If elbow needs to stay in place (angle its at) then your only option is to tighten nut clockwise looking down and hope it pushes up against washer and doesn't strip axle housing threads. I don't have drawings.

Maybe ask dealer? They must know...

I think this fitting is similar to the one in this pic.

The male end is turned into the casting (clockwise) until it is at the right angle, then the nut is turned down clockwise to tighten against the washer under which is the o-ring.

Wow. Picture worth many words. So the lower end of elbow does not need o-ring. Perfect, now if I can just get wrench on nut. Not much room.

Looks to me that there is an o-ring that the washer presses against the casting when the nut is turned clockwise. So not sure what you mean by the "lower end of elbow does not need o-ring".
The pic shows the male threaded end (to left in pic), an o-ring, a washer (that is flanged), and the nut to tighten and put pressure on the o-ring.

And correct, a wrench to tighten the nut on the green fitting should tighten on the washer and o-ring to hopefully stop the leaking.

I meant there is not a pressure joint between top of hex nut and elbow. The elbow has 2 ends; one is horizontal and one is vertical. I thought there was an o-ring on top side of hex nut. I was mistaken. I now know I need to turn hex nut clockwise looking down. Thanks for help. I really appreciate it. The experience here is great for a newbie. I have much to learn about taking care of these machines.

I can't get a wrench on the hex nut with the wrench in the same plane as the nut. The wrench must be angled down due to fuel tank interference. Talked to Deere mechanic today and he said that I need to drain tank and remove it, and remove seat in order to access elbow fitting and hex nut. Also he said the elbow fitting has 2 sets of threads in series but not continuous. He showed me a fitting not installed in a tractor housing. In order to align the horizontal leg of elbow you thread it into axle housing first before turning hex nut to compress o-ring. If you don't thread elbow deep enough you run out if threads on hex nut so that the o-ring is not adequately compressed. He said I need to remove elbow and inspect o-ring, reseat it deep enough and then seal both end using new o-rings. But sounds like I need to remove fuel tank and seat first to have proper access for tools. The tractor is under warranty but I don't own a truck and trailer big enough to haul my 8000 lb tractor. If I have to pay them to pick it up and haul round trip twice, it may be much cheaper and educational for me to attempt repair myself. My farm is 43 miles one way to dealer. That is 172 miles total. Any previous experience repairing this joint? Fuel tank doesn't look that difficult to remove.

Well removed seat and fuel tank today. Had to siphon 15 gal fuel. Found the fitting was not threaded into axle housing deep enough to allow adequate seating of o-ring into top of axle housing. If you compare the 2 pics you can see a gap between top of hex nut that did not exists before repair . I removed the elbow fitting to inspect o- rings which were fine. The horizontal collar joint is a flat faced o-ring. The vertical end of fitting has an o-ring that is compressed into a machine recess. The threads on the fitting for the hex nut are not continuous with the axle penetrating threads . The hex nut can bottom out with inadequate compression if you don't assure fitting bottoms out first. The back it out just enough to align with bent pipe. The proof is in the gap . Feel pretty good for a newbie. If you can't access stuff you can't work on it. Could not get wrench on hex nut with tank on. Furthermore, without removing and assuring full penetration into axle housing, the hex nut could never be seated far enough.
