Back in the '70s when I was building fences for a living, if we needed to dig holes in hardpan, my boss would hire it done. Most of these guys had an auger mounted on the back of an old 4x4 pickup, that they had removed the bed and set up to drive it from a seat next to the auger so they could see where the hole needed to be without a spotter.
Used to see a lot of Jeeps with augers mounted on the back also, not so much now with the skid steers and ditchwitches being more prevalent these days.
