Re: filter change

Hopefully I'll have the correct filter in the near future to try. I sure hope that takes care of it!

Re: filter change

ATF is high detergent. This may have loosened up a bunch of crud in the system and be plugging the screen/filters. I would get enough of the proper fluid for 2 changes and change it then run it for an hour or 2 and then clean the screens, etc and change it again. Hopefully all will be well after that.

Need to get that filter off and install the correct filter ASAP and DO NOT run the tractor until you do. Cavitation will destroy a pump and its seals. Use the hyd. fluid the manufacturer calls for.

Re: fluid condition

I would suggest flushing it as well. It sounds like the small micron filter plugged quickly after change, an indication that there's trash in the system. If the small micron filters are less expensive and more readily available I might buy 2 or 3, flush the system with good fluid, then run the system a few minutes, replace the filter, do this a few times before putting the correct filter on.

Re: fluid condition

When I get the OEM filter I'll drain the transaxle and check the strainer one more time, it still seemed fairly bad on the second cleaning. The NAPA filters are $10, the OEM close to $80, ouch!

Re: fluid condition

I'm wondering aloud here but...
If you HAVE to temporarily use something other than the OEM filter wouldn't it be better to use one with a micron rating slightly larger than the OEM?

I'm thinking that junk in the system that's a few microns bigger than what would be filtered by the OEM filter would be less dangerous than cavitating the pump due to a constricted flow. ...Unless, of course it's an HST....

Re: fluid condition

The common "replacement" filters are 2 micron I believe. That's the only option I know of. I think I read that the OEM is 24 micron. Quite a difference. Bill

It depends. Most articulating hydraulic components specify
a maximum allowable aperture for the system filter. So that
is one constraint. The other is the volume of fluid a filter
can continually pass before its internal bypass valve will
open. Both requirements need to be satisfied.

Very intersting reading, I believe a JD 950 was also a Yanmar built tractor. If the filters and fluid don't help I guess the pump may be coming off. I did look carefully for suction leaks but the sevice manual keeps mentioning bad pump seal which I also ordered. I did get a 3000 psi gauge in today that I plan on installing right after the pump, just to see what it may say. Thanks, bill.
