Hydraulic pump sounds like it is cavitating?

The filter screen is a cylinder and is located in the main sump. There is a triangular plate on the side opposite the filter (I think - check the manual - its been a while since I've done this and the tractor is WAY up in the barn : ) ). Take that plate off and pull out the mesh cylinder. I have to wrap in a clean towel to put it back in because it rubs against the backhoe subframe and cleans all of the protective coating (dirt) off.

The sump will empty itself when the plate comes off so drain it before hand.

Thanks for the reminder - need to clean the suction screen next time. Haven't done it 100 hours or so - since before our 'plug-up'. May be part of the reason the filter seems to plug up so quickly.

It was pretty ratty at the first 50 (lots of metal shavings) but was pretty clean after that so I haven't been checking it.

Kind of an old post but I think I ran my tractor for two years before I got around to pulling the prescreen filter, sure enough full of metal shavings, put er back together and now the hydraulic system is very smooth and fast. Thanks for the suggestions.
