Hydraulic Stone Splitter

Greg9504,

I noticed some of the stones were not cracking straight, and was wondering if you had scored all four sides would the split be any better/straighter? Is there a grain pattern in that type of stone?

tlbuser, Wineslob thanks for the hardfacing welding rod tip, hadn't heard of them before. I did talk to the other buy who is using the wood splitter wedges on a stone splitter and he said they eventually reach a certain dull state and just stay that way (and work fine). So I was thinking maybe they work harden a bit over time.

JJ I think you are looking at an edge that hasn't been put through the splitter yet. In the last picture the edge that was split is facing the camera of the stone on the left.

If you're doing mass quantities....say a retaining wall, or facing a wall of a house...you'd wanna go a carbide tip....last for quite a few splits, and I' don't think it's all that expensive....

I just had to look at those pics again.....that is awesome....I have a tool I use for doing broken edge detail on the front of kitchen counters....but usually the counters are only 4CM thick....when that piece breaks off, and makes that bang!!! WOW!! I can only imagine the sound that thing of yours makes...

Impressive machine. Have the neighbors called the cops on you for shooting a gun in the neighborhood?

Congratulations on a project well done.:D

Many thanks for the pictures and videos.:D

Makes my rock splitting efforts look rather pathetic!

mjncad I think my neighbours will be happy when all they have to put up with is the noise of the stone splitting. The constant drone of the angle grinder is probably starting to get on their nerves.

Egon I saw your post on splitting granite. I use feather and wedges too, for getting the large slabs down to size to fit into the splitter. Nothing pathetic about your work. It's great. I think this splitting stone thing is a bit of a sickness... it's all I can think about :)

Here's some pictures using the feather and wedges...

Where do you get the large slabs or do you have your own quarry source??:D

There is a feeling of satisfaction when a stone splits as wanted. :D

That dull hammer sound instead of the "Ping".
