I'm no expert but have learned that technically it's not a check valve but for all intents and purposes the name seems to fit what it does.
I've been told that a true check valve is what would be used in say a boom lift/crane, so that the boom would not come crashing down due to a catastrophic failure in the hydraulic system causing loss of pressure/fluid.
