Hydraulic/transmission fluid

   / Hydraulic/transmission fluid #11
My manual finally arrived monday and I spent the evening reading it. The Beaver owner that posted earlier is correct, the Buck and Beaver have a common sump for the working of the final drives, transmission and PTO functions. They use 80-90 wt. according too the manual. The word hydraulic,s I will reserve that word until I install a front end loader, its sump is up front on the engine and I do not have any hydraulic implements on my tractor yet. The Buck and Beaver works off of the timing gear and engine speed for the fluids in the tranny,. final drives and pto functions. I placed a entire gallon of oil in the engine, Iam a little bit over, so the engine does hold close to a gallon but not quite. Get down to a quart in the gallon than check each time you add.

I did start the engine and I did clean the hydraulic screen on the side of the tranmission. All is well now.

The hyds' on that machine want to pump gear oil? That's a really really odd arangement. most open sump machines like UTF.. oldies like 8n's that are open sump like gear oil.. but I havn't seen a new one yet that did.. especially not if it uses a vane pump.

My newly-acquired (but old) Kubota L245DT specs SAE 80 Gear Oil for the Transmission (24.3 qts).

I don't think there's any separate hydraulic sump - at least the only other fluid changes mentioned in the owner's manual are 1)steering gear box 2)front diff and front wheel shaft (which both take SAE 90).

The tractor has a FEL, and I don't actually know what the previous owner has in the transmission/hydraulic system. It may be SAE 80, or it may be UTF.

Anyone have experience with this model and can tell me which to use?

Thanks
Matt

Drain some and see. There is a huge difference between UTF and 80. The 80 will be real thick and the UTF will be thiner than 10-30 motor oil
If it is 80 and the loader is working fine maybe stick with it. I will bet if your loader is working fine you will find it is something similar to UTF. If it is thin like UTF that is what I would put back.
