Hydraulic Valve body rebuild

I have an old John Deere 350 dozer that needs the valve body rebuilt. First off can the spools be removed without taking the valve body out of the box? Second, has anyone on here done this before, and if the spools are ok do I just replace the O-rings. Any other information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Also, on the cylinders, is there a place to buy rebuild kits that are good but not pay the high John Deere factory prices? Thanks in advance. RRM

Yes, you can remove the spools by removing the cans on the bottom and remove the nut in the end of the spool. The spool should slide out.

I can't say that a rebuild kit won't work, however, spools are not designed to be replaced as the fit in the bore is precise.

The o-rings on spools are design to keep crud out. not hold pressure.

If a spool is leaking, it is leaking at a certain rate, and most manufacturer have a go/no test in drops per minutes leakage rate whether they replace a spool.

If the valve/dozer is out of warranty, it will be up to you as to what you can accept.

In most cases, a new valve is called for.

If you carefully measure the sizes of the cylinder seals, and pay close attention to their
cross-sectional shape, you can usually find replacements in the Hercules Hydraulic catalog.
I have used them before and they are indeed less money than JD.
