my friend bought a ford 3000 runs good looks good but he didnt try the 3 point lift until he put a tiller on it said it would only lift about 6 -8 inchs he called and ask if i could help told him i would try asked him to check the fluids and he said he changed to hydraulic fluid cause it was milky(water right?) dont have alot of experiance with fords hope some one could give us a direction to go in thanks

When under load is there any noise like squealing, hissing, etc?
Since it lifts some is there any mechanical binding for some reason? Will the tiller move side to side? If not could be an indication of binding?

Is the PTO shaft bottoming out? Different tractor to tiller so?? Simple solution disconnect the PTO and see if it will raise.

I presume there is no change from cold to warm oil?

The mechanical checks noted above are correct, but along with a fluid change when its contaminated with water any filters need to be changed too.

tried to unhook pto shaft no luck no noise that is able to hear thought that maybe pump out or line stopped up but cant hear any noise the metal lines appear to be in good shape from looking at the out side the tiller is only 4 foot it should pick up no problem side to side movement is not anything more than normal he said he unhooked the tiller and was able to move up by hand but did not stay

Burt,
If I understand this correctly you are saying the arms will not lift with no load. Is this correct?

Real dumb question but.... Is there a stop on three point lever for adjusting height. Is it possibly set and locked so that the lever can not be pulled all the way back.

I am not familiar with a 3000 but if this is the same vintage as the 4000 & 5000 (1960's) they did have stops on them that if forced would turn and prevent the full range of motion. They where meant to limit down travel but if bent or readjusted they would also limit up travel.

Possibly check the linkage from the lever to the control valve. Did some thing fall in there over time and now is limiting the travel.

really dumb question. Does this model have adjustable links on both lift arms? I.e. arm the arms dragging on the ground when fully lowered? If yes shorten them and your lift height should increase.

good luck

Milky fluid( the color of coffee with cream) is contaminated with water.
Howeve,r you generally don't use hydraulic oil per se in the common sump for the rear axle and hydraulics. You use UTF(Universal Tractor Fluid) or a fluid that mees the Ford M2c134D spec. Not lifting could be caused by a blocked hydraulic filter. a stuck open relief valve, bad pump, or a leaking lift cylinder, etc.

Why can't you remove the pto shaft? Are you sure it isn't bound up and preventing the lift from going up??

i agree with jerry.

utf goes in that common diffy/hyd sump... and ditto on the pto shaft.

if it lifts some I'd say unload valve is not sticking.

though relief could be bad.. or cyl leaking badly.. pump worn out and bypassing.. etc.

got a remote on it? plug a 3000 psi gauge in and deadhead it, or thread it nto the option port onthe top cover and chain the 3pt arms down and try to lift them.. see what psi you are making
